Macbook Pro RAM Management

For some reason, my 15" Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro w/4GB of RAM is having problems with RAM management. For some reason, while running a few applications such as Safari and iTunes, the RAM gauge in iStat Pro shoots up until the bar is 5/6 of the way full. Performance also decreases drastically, as in Pages takes forever to open while the program is still running.

As soon as I get this problem again, I'll post it. It is somewhat intermittent, although the problem appears when the computer has not been shut down for a while.
