After a failed update install due to low battery, I attempted to recover the system by pressing cmd + R, the preceeding steps were followed until the Mac OS X Utilities screen was displayed.
"Reinstall Mac OS X" was selected and steps were followed but at the end a blank screen was displayed "Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X" whereby no possibility to select a disk was available.
I quitted Install Mac OS X Lion and selected Disk Utility. On selecting continue, only disk0 and Mac OS X Base System were displayed and it is not possible to erase any of them.

Could anyone advise on how to recover the system. Thanks for input

Boot into internet recovery using OPTION+COMMAND+R

Erase the drive and reinstall MacOS from there. It should work.

The MacOS Base System is not what you're looking for. You likely corrupted the drive and hopefully it will show up in the internet recovery environment.

You will need a good internet connection and a power source...

After booting into internet recovery there is no possibility to proceed with installation, the "Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X" was displayed and there was no disk available to select.
Returning to the disk utility offers no solution, it's not possible to erase neither the disk 0 nor Mac OS X base system

With your recent updates and experience I would begin looking into the possibility of a hard drive failure as mentioned above.

Can you tell us more about what computer you’re using? It could be that the hard drive has either completely died or you have a guilty HD cable that is making it impossible to see the hard drive.

you can check available storage from terminal using command: diskutil list

Do you have Filevault enabled? You might have to go to Disk Utility in Recovery and mount the disk after entering the password.
