Hope this is the right forum.

Been connecting a Macbook Pro to a Stereo System via Airport Express. System Audio is refusing to connect to the Stereo System, out of the blue. It appears in the Audio Menu (Menu Bar) and Audio Preferences, but refuses to connect (see image below). Meanwhile Airplaying via iTunes or another device (an iPhone) works fine.

Tried trashing Audio Preference files, Resetting NVRam, no fix.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thank you

Macbook Pro 2010, MacOS Sierra.

when this happens, I need to restart just itiunes, if this helps

reboot your router.

not the airport express.... your ROUTER

the main one, that handles all your internet, and also any separate wifi or networking gear you may have.

Pretty much every airplay issue I've had has been network related.

Airport Express is a router.

Rebooting the router didn't work.
(Yes, the Airport Express is connected to a separate router)

Edit:
I'm convinced this is an OS issue, since Airplay works directly from iTunes from the same laptop. It just doesn't switch system wide from the Menu Bar (I read somewhere that iTunes uses a separate process for Airplay). Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this inside the OS? To reiterate, I've already reset PVRam and tried deleting a bunch of preference files.

Incredible as it may sound, it seems like there is an issue whereby Airplay stops working after a certain date on older systems: February 14th 2022 (some have run into this issue around the same date in 2021). Updating the OS, if possible, seems to work. But for older systems there is no fix for now. There's a thread about it here:
