    Hi all,

    We have just replaced a cracked screen in a 2 day old macbook pro for a user (he dragged it off the desk with a security cable!) and since then there is no brightness control in the display settings panel and the F2-F3 keys don't work either. We have reinstalled a fresh OS and boot camp. The brightness keys work fine in bootcamp (XP) but not under OS X (10.4.10 currently). Does anyone have any idea whats going on? The original screen was a Samsung and the replacement is a Chi Mei brand (both are used by apple) I did note that you are supposed to use different Display rear housings for the different brand screens. Any clue here?

    All we can think of is that it needs a particular firmware or somthing to recognise the different screen. Does anyone know how to force a reload of a firmware?

    Otherwise the Macbook pro is showing no signs of its mishap!

    Thanks for any help.

    I am going to assume that you are trying to reload the OS from the originally supplied disks. If that is the case it may be that some of the controllers for the Chi Mei screen are not on that disk because the computer originally shipped with a Samsung screen. If this is the case getting ahold of a retail boxed version of the OS and installing that should install the drivers.

    Two things that I'm not sure about regarding the above idea;
    1) Is the OSX that ships with the machine tailored to that machine?
    2) Are the controllers for Chi Mei screens different than Samsung screens?

    I realize that this may not be much help but it was an idea......:)
