All the "direct alternatives" that exist, are more alternatives for the MacBook Air. Ultrabooks generally make me think of the netbook craze, albeit more capable machines.

The MBPr is just crazy to me. Its Geekbench score is in the same bracket as 8-core Mac Pros... and it's approaching Air territory with regards to handling.

There isn't an alternative. Period. In today's market there is no competition to the rMBP.

So I've ordered the rMBP now and this thread has really helped me make that decision. However it also annoys me that there is no windows alternative for a cheaper price at this point (if that make sense) . I'll continue to update this thread if you guys suggest any more 'alternatives'.

The Asus UX31a is pretty sweet - awesome screen (extremely high-res, matte IPS-panel), very fast, 900 bucks cheaper.

Asus Zenbook U500VZ is coming the Real Alternative :)

I agree. The Asus is probably the only one of those that I would seriously consider myself (given the graphics, battery life, and size of the thing). However the size of the Asus is actually just as thick as the conventional 2012 MBP.

With so many similar specs, size and upgradeability it would make more sense to do a 3-way comparison. Interesting to see the total cost after you have upgraded all the RAM, SSDs etc yourself. And of course the things you can't upgrade like the IPS panel on the Asus which aught to be better than the TN panel on the conventional MBP. Very interesting indeed.

Something else I was curious about: Why no equivalent product from Leveno? I didn't see any Thinkpad equivalent being discussed here.

Of course if you aren't buying a Mac then remember to try out the touchpad first.
