As far as I can remember, retina had the same config options when it was launched. Nothing has changed since... no updates, no nothing. But whatever... As for the "worth it" problem: that's something only you can answer. It's your money, you'll have to live with it and use it.

To me ( for my needs ), it was well worth it... but that's me and my needs.

Well, I guess things have changed. I'm sure when it came out those weren't options.

The options you talked about were available in the beginning too.
I own a rMBP from the very start and configured it with 16GB Ram.

And about that thing you posted earlier saying everything on the Retina Screen is so tiny:
I am not sure what you looked at, but it sounds like you checked out retinas that were changed to a different scaling type. The default 2800:1800 as 1440:900 is not tiny at all.

My machine is a 2.2 Ghz quad core i7, but the current non-Retina starts at 2.3Ghz, same as the Retina. To configure the 15" Retina to be equal to mine would run $3478, and you would have to go through Apple to do this.
I am not sure what you are talking about. Post your deatiled specs please so we can see if your 2.2 Ghz i7 is really so much better than the Retinas 2.3Ghz i7.
