Macbook Pro Retina to Sony HD TV

New to Mac (and tech challenged) I checked out a couple of threads about connecting to tv and found differences of opinion, and apparently depends on the tv.

Best ask in PC World I thought. He sold me a Lightening Digital AV Adapter (as does picture and sound he said) and an HDMI cable. Since I have iPad2 and iPhone 4s, it seems this cable is good for nothing - or am I missing something?
 
That cable helps you to connect an iPhone 5, an iPad 4 and an iPad mini to a TV or similar displaying device, it is not meant for Macs.

Since you have an HDMI out on your Mac, use that to connect to your (probably modern) HDTV. Just buy any HDMI cable you can get and put one end into the HDMI slot of your MacBook Pro with Retina Display and the other end in the HDMI slot of the TV.

 
The Lightning AV adapter is useless for your purpose.

For the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, you want the 30-pin AV adapter.

For your rMBP, there is an HDMI port, so just connect that to your TV and you should be set.
