So I got a MacBook Air 15 M2 for Christmas. I really like the 15” screen (I feel it’s the perfect size) and it’s the Midnight edition. Love the color hate the smudges lol. First off, I’m not a digital creator, I don’t make videos, maybe edit some photos nothing crazy, and mostly do it on the iPhone anyway.

That being said, I don’t like performance and one thing I cannot live without is promotion (120hz) screen. I’ve had an iPhone pro max for a while and the iPad Pro models. Using the MBA 15 has made me realize this.

This laptop is used mostly to browse the internet, some documents, watch YouTube and I use Think or Swim trading platform which is mostly why I got one, the iPad app just isn’t good enough as a stand alone.

My conundrum here is there are so many options it makes my head spin. I went from just going with the MBP 14 base model with the 8GB ram and 512GB SsD to the M3 Pro 18GB ram to the 16” M3 pro. I do love the larger screen but my wife says it’s going to be annoying later on how large it is… (we got around before with just an iPad Pro in the house before) I also didn’t want to break the bank on it either, as the 16 is really getting up there. I’m doing the Apple trade in with iPad Pro for 510.00 credit toward it.

Can I get by with just the base M3 model pro? In terms of performance for what I’m doing?

Is the MBP 14 M3 Pro with 18GB the better option or is the 16 MBP M3 Pro the one?

*I won’t be traveling (maybe once a year) with it. It’s mostly used around the house from room to living room etc.

I just got back from Best Buy and noticed the Space black variants aren’t very fingerprint resistant as they claim… however the Space Gray was virtually clean. Initially I thought I only wanted Space Black but I though the Space Gray was very clean and nice.

*16 MBP left, 14 MBP right: both are space black, lighting making the difference.

The base 14" is more than capable for your usage.
You are probably right. However, am I handicapping myself with the M3 vs the Pro and maybe more importantly the 8GB of Ram? I probably don’t want to upgrade for a whileeee.

If you think your daily workflow might change down the line in a meaningful way, then there is nothing wrong with getting more RAM. As to the M3 versus M3 Pro, I don't think you would see a real noticeable difference between the two given current usage. Too many people on here are too eager to sell someone else a machine that 'overkill'. My philosophy is buy for what you need today not possible years from now as tech changes so quickly.

My usage is about like yours. I am not a digital creator either. Right now, I am leaning towards the 14" M3 Pro with the 18GB of ram. I keep my laptops around 4-5 years. 8GB of ram would make me uncomfortable.

Go to Apple's online REFURBISHED store.
Get a 2023 MacBook Pro 14" with 16gb of RAM and a 1tb SSD.
Get the "space grey" color.

Will serve you well.
Thanks! I checked it out, it comes out to 1949.

The current M3 Pro with 18GB and 512GB I can get for 1849 via Apple Education pricing or via Adorama for 1799. I get the refurb has 1TB hard drive but I really don’t need that, I barely would use 256GB but I get the 512GB is the better performer also the MBP start with it.

Anything I’m missing?

The ram is the one thing that is making it difficult for me. I’ve had MacBook Pro’s in the past where you would be able to upgrade the RAM at some later point and that hasn’t been the case in a long time. So if we are considering the same laptop we would be getting for +400.00.

M3 Pro vs M3
18 GB vs 8 GB
Two fans (I hear its less noisy) vs One
Connect 2 Displays vs 1
+/- Space Black/Silver vs Space Gray/Silver (one thing I like about Space black is the power cable is black, the others show dirt and oil quickly)

M3 Pro not really worth it over M2 Pro, in some cases m2 is even faster. You also get 25% less memory bandwidth. The 1tb ssd you will surely appreciate, and the 512gb of the m3 will definitely be slower.
Get the M2, you do not need anything that the M3 offers, which are mainly gpu improvements, which you wont be taking advantage of in any way.

OP:

If you don't need a 1tb SSD, get the "base model" 2023 MacBook Pro 14".
Comes standard with 16gb of RAM and a 512gb SSD.

WARNING WARNING WARNING
Do not buy ANY m-series Mac UNLESS it has 16gb of RAM.
8gb isn't enough any more.

16gb is "the new 8"...

Thanks! Yeah I really didn’t want to limit it to 8. I ended up biting the bullet and trading in my iPad Pro 12.9 since I had an 11 pro my daughter never ended up using. I got the MBP M3 Pro with 18gb in space black with edu pricing. I just got it setup this morning so let’s see how it goes. Going from the 15” to 14” seems ok so far, although I’ve glanced over at the 15” MBA next to it and was like hmmm 🤣. When I picked up at the Apple Store of course the 16 was right there at the pick up spot…
Then why did you like my post saying you should get M2 instead...

It was a misquote. “Like” can be thanking someone for advice, but don’t worry I’ll go ahead and remove the like if it makes you feel better 😃. Happy New Year

#2 is exactly my plan. I have the 15 air and it's fine. It's not too big. I just want a little more speed. I always get the 16gb/1Tb config as I find it's a sweet spot in terms of longevity and Apple's ridiculous upgrade pricing.
