i am also currently looking into getting an SSD for my mid 2012. A few months ago i was about to get the 840 EVO but then i saw that people were having problems with a bug. i believe there is now a simple fix for the bug but it has put me off getting one.

I can't decide between the 840 EVO and Crucial M500 now.

My vote goes to the Crucial m500.
    Fast and affordable.

what's the bug with the 840 evo? been running one for quite a time, was in my 13" and now is on the 15", both mid-2012.

    smooth as butter.

I heard the Crucial M550 was great. I myself was also put off by the "bug" the Samsung 840 EVO has. I'll be ordering the M550 next week.

damn i'm doomed, my firmware is really old (ext0bb0q) and updating is a PITA as I don't have the superdrive anymore... you sir ruined my day thanks :D

why on earth those guys don't make something that runs inside the OS like they do for windows is beyond me. a simple cmdline thing would work.

Look at post #65 on in this thread. Some have been able to work it out on a bootable USB key.
