I have a mid 2010 15"mbp and have a samsung 840 evo 120GB,DVD Drive sled coming in a few days. My current hard drive is a 500GB HDD which has 245GB free. I was going to Install Yoesmite on the ssd and then copy part of my old hard drive over. But what files do I need and what is the best way of doing it?

I just did this yesterday. Seagate Hybrid 500GB in regular spot, Crucial SSD in dvd sled.

I had like 200gb on the disk so that was obviously too much. I deleted all of my torrents (big videos), and also realized that my Movies, Pictures, and Music folders would stay on the platter. So just move all your big (non application) files to those folders or create a new (games, movies, etc.).

    Get Carbon Copy Cloner

Clone everything except for Movies, Music, and Pictures. (and any other folder you wish to keep). Here's a great guide below on how to set it up easily.

And here's a great guide to keep your hard drive from always spinning.

After copying all my applications and essential files I've used 47GB on the SSD with 80gb still available. Always try and keep at least 20GB free on the SSD for the best performance.

    Enjoy!
