I think that part of the problem was that when the screenshot was taken Word was requiring my attention. It was asking me what kind of document I wanted to open.

It seems that when an application requires your attention (or at least Word), and if you don't immediately attend to it, then the CPU temperature really skyrockets.

I don't know if this a common thing, or an issue particular to my machine.

I must admit that recently my machine's fans has been whirring more loudly and erratically than usual. Not sure if that's relevant. Other than that, no other issues.

55C - 60C is the maximum operating temp for most Hard Drives. Above that and you could be shortening the Hard Drives life. That and keeping the CPU temp below 80C are the main things to look out for.
