I am trying to connect my Vizio HDTV up to my 2007 MacBook Pro, but am having trouble getting audio out to the tv. I'm using a DVI to HDMI cable, but obviously that won't send audio.

I purchased this cable from MonoPrice:

    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022902 &p_id=1558&seq=1&format=2

I plugged the cable in to the back of the tv and into the headphone jack of my laptop, but there is no sound at all. When I go to the System Preferences under "Sound" and then "Output" it allows me to choose a device for sound output, but the only choice available is "Digital Out." Under "Settings for the selected device" it says, "The Selected device has no output controls."

Can anyone tell me what's wrong???

You may want to check the sound input on the TV. Since sound generally comes through the HDMI cable your TV is probably preset to try and pull the sound from the HDMI cable. Your TV maybe looking into the wrong place to find the sound.

That would make sense, but I've been looking and I can't find a setting under "audio" that will change the audio source.

Pull out the manual, most TVs allow the audio to come through a different port than the HDMI port while still getting the picture from the HDMI.

Sometimes that option lies in the far reaches of poorly made menus most people never use.
