Hello, iMac users! So I have some questions for y'all, but let me start explaining my (long) history with iMac and MacBooks.

Purchased my first Apple computer in early 2010, an iMac 27-inch (probably the late '09 edition, with the tiny green pixel error). At the time I studied graphic design (not anymore). I also purchased a MacBook Pro in '10 'cause I needed to do work on the go... but my iMac was still my primary computer. I departed from graphic design in 2013, 'cause I lost passion for it and as most artists know, it's a though business and hard to live off, especially as an independant artist. My iMac became more of consumption device.. But I loooved the screen and macOS. I have since studied other things where I've became more dependent of my Macbook for class (not graphic related) and have upgraded twice, once due to battery issues and second time in '18 cause I wanted the 15-inch screen as I was craving more screen... Now I'm really missing having that huge iMac 27-inch screen... Especially at home! It was very liberating to have many apps like Word, Notes, Safari eat in full size and even a movie playing in the corner, while on a MacBook it feels suffocating and limited. I've also noticed that the Macbook has ruined my neck and posture, even despite having bought a stand for it, and as you laptop users know, you develop a headache from looking down towards the screen. I still wanna keep my Macbook on the side when needed, though.

So, what would you guys advice me? Buy an iMac 27-inch again? Or Apple's LG 27-inch screen as a monitor for my Mac? However, I don't want to use it as a second screen or a blown up mirrored version of what my Macbook displays on an 27-inch screen..

If you took your time to read everything I wrote, thank you! I know I'm rambling but it's always easier for people to give their 2 cents, when knowing a little bit about the user :)

Personally, I think a MBP in clamshell mode with an external monitor is a great setup. That's what I have and it works well - big screen at home, portability when I need it.

What monitor do you use? And when plugging it to the monitor how does it display the screen from the laptop? Is it mirroring it on a larger screen, or does it extend it to show more workspace?

It's an old 27" Asus I don't recall which model (I'm not at home at the moment). My MBP is a mid-2012 so it's also pretty old. I have it set up in clamshell mode which means the monitor essentially acts as the primary display and the laptop's lid is closed.

I use my trusty 8 year old Apple 27" Thunderbolt display which costed $1000 back then but now you can get it for less than $250 in very good shape.

I have 2 of these displays - one for my 16" MBP and a 21.5" iMac - both as extended.

Love how the "older" Apple monitor still looks great even with newer tech...

Apple sure knows how to design their displays for the future....

Both. You can mirror what the internal shows or you can extend it.

My thoughts:

Don't get "the maxed-out" model. Get either the midrange or baseline instead.

DO get a 27" iMac. You'll love the extra screen space.
Get 8gb of RAM to start.
If you find that you need more RAM later on, it's easy to add it yourself.

DON'T BUY ANY iMac UNLESS it has an SSD inside.
DO NOT buy one with a fusion drive.
The 512gb SSD represents "the best value", in my opinion.
If money is a consideration, you can still do well with the 256gb (you can always plug in a USB3 SSD for more storage).

BE AWARE that you MUST special-order iMacs with SSDs through Apple's build-to-order pages online. They ARE NOT sold in the brick-n-mortar Apple Stores.

BE AWARE that you CAN buy an Apple-refurbished iMac pre-configured with an SSD. But you have to keep a close eye on Apple's refurb pages, and be ready to buy when the configuration you want shows up, because they move quickly.

Final thought:
Have you considered a Mac Mini in combination with the 3rd party display of your choice?
They're very nice "little boxes" (I have both a 2012 and 2018).

I use my MBP in clamshell mode with an Apple Thunderbolt Display. Works great with lots of screen space. It has the downside of being hard to look at with bifocal lenses. I have special glasses to use with it.

Thanks for the very in-depth reply. Since my post I've tried looking into monitors, but realized that the best for Macs (like the LG 32UL950) cost almost half an iMac. Hopefully I'll graduate and receive my bachelor in winter 2021, meaning I won't be needing to live off a MacBook. Therefore I want to get an iMac again ASAP. It sure was my happiest day as a Mac user, having a whole computer in one large screen... and keep in mind I was owning the old and heavy 2009 model. However, I don't have the funds to go with SDD... According to the rumors, the new iMacs will be having SDD as a standard... and a redesigned screen, hopefully a 29-inch screen! I really hope so, I'm impatiently waiting for next monday, so I can pre-order it the moment it drops. I'd be very disappointed if its the same reused design, cause I don't want to purchase one and then next year they drop the redesign.
