Clearly (as suggested in the post above) this is a problem with nVidia graphics drivers. Ironic that a technically inferior graphics card is producing superior graphics performance - highlights the importance of good software drivers!

The Nvidia drivers have been the cause of all kinds of frustration for a co-worker of mine who bought an SR MBP and whose work happens to be graphics-intensive enough to cause lockups about every 15 minutes. He has to make do with an assigned Dell laptop from work to get through the day, which is a real shame. Meanwhile, I bought my 2.33GHz MBP just before the refresh because I didn't feel like waiting, and it's been totally smooth sailing for me.

I think I'll bookmark this thread and recall it the next time I see one of those silly "Should I wait until next week/month/year/decade before buying?" posts. 😀

I should note that this is happening on both the MBP (2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo) and the iMac (2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo Aluminum).

In doing a comparison of the two systems again, I notice that things are actually smoother on the iMac. You can especially notice the difference with window minimizations. They're smooth on the iMac and choppy on the MBP.

I notice some choppiness when moving into and out of the dock with magnification on. Scrolling back and forth along the dock is super smooth.

It's hard to define the choppiness. It's not really that noticeable. It's almost like watching a tv show that's 29 frames per second instead of 30, if that makes any sense.

If I turn the reflective dock off as mentioned in another thread, it is super smooth (same with having the dock on the side).

I experienced the same choppiness in Tiger only when I had several apps open or when a large task was being performed. This choppiness occurs in Leopard with zero apps open.

I should note that this is happening on both the MBP (2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo) and the iMac (2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo Aluminum).

AGAIN.... BOTH ATI CARDS..

I have the same problems with choppiness, 2,4ghz mbp, 256mb graphics.

I've seen it run really really great sometimes, I've seen it totally suck at other times, batter/on power doesn't mean anything, can be both in either situation.

THey definitly need to fix some things, bugs & performance wise, this is ffing unacceptable for a 2400€ laptop. I've posted on the apple discussions forums but no awnser, the good thing, they didn't delete the thread (yet) 🙂

Problem with Flash

I've noticed a problem with flash in Leopard on a new Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz 2Gb machine, with 256 vram. The Applications fan out really slowly and jerky, and flash videos in Safari or Real player videos are are also jumpy and frustrating. And ideas?

Disappointed with the terrible graphics performance using Leopard on MBP

I ran across this thread through a google search, because I'm experiencing the same frustrating graphics problems on my MBP 2.4GHz. I agree with a previous post. This is totally unacceptable performance on such an expensive laptop. While I didn't do a clean install, from what I'm reading in these posts.. a clean install doesn't seem to definitely resolve these problems.

Where I'm noticing the problems are in the dock (magnification, the genie effect, and stacks), dashboard, and spaces. In all those areas, there is just terrible "stuttering", "jerkiness", "low frame rate".. whatever you want to call it.. it's just not a fast smooth animation or transition. It's very very frustrating.

I actually turned off the 3D dock and the dock magnification, to try to minimize the terrible performance when it comes to these graphic effects. And when I use spaces, I don't use the expose feature of spaces (where you can see a "thumbnail" of all your spaces, and then click to select and go to that "space"), because it is so slow and not smooth at all. I just go to the app I want to reach using the dock or the keyboard.. luckily the transition from one space to another using that method is quick and smooth.

Oh.. also I noticed when using iPhoto and Spaces.. I have to resize my iPhoto window (to whatever degree), after launch, or else it will be a choppy transition to that app when using Spaces. But the transition is smooth after I resize my iPhoto window.. it's weird, and don't know why it's doing that, but that trick works and removes the problem.

I loaded Leopard on my Dad's old ibook 1.0 GHz, and it's actually performing more smoothly in regard to these graphic features, than my new MPB. This is ridiculous!

I'm glad I ran across this thread.. at least I'm not the only one experiencing this. Please fix this Apple/NVidia!

Here we are with OS X 10.5.2 and I still have choppy graphics.

On mains power, they are acceptable, but not smooth. On battery it varies, but most of the time badly choppy.

What is the cause for this? Bad drivers? I thought by now Apple could have ironed out the animations.

So much for Core Animation power.
