make up your mind

i think the choice between the two depends on how you'll be using your laptop.
without a doubt, if you'll be gaming more, instead of working..then go for the alienware..

if you need specific software like final cut pro or aperture.. then go for the MBP.

i really don't understand why some people cannot make a simple decision.
you won't get the best laptop either way.. because there isn't one!
even the $1,000,000 windows based laptop Luvaglio being sold isn't perfect.

i wonder if you compared the price of the laptops just before the MBP was updated last month, or february, i cant remember.

it would have been obvious which one was "cheaper"

but again. with apple you get a cool thin machine and you get a block of brick with no OSX in the pac part.

if macs prices are reviewed every 3 months, then i will agree. (although i am already about to agree)

Dan the niche that it fills is the home laptop.

You never leave the house with it, but you also dont want to be chained to a desk. It actually makes a lot of sense.

The 17" laptop has developed for the same reasons. Nobody who does any serious traveling uses a 17" laptop. Its just a continuation of the whole weight vs display tradeoff.

lots of family's have a pc in a kitchen area now a days. It is nice to pick it up and sit on the couch with it.

Frankly thats why I got my MBP rather than an Imac. (That and the imac wouldnt fit under the botom edge of the upper cabinets)

This is just a logical extension of that idea taken to an extreme.

Actually, I think plenty of travelers carry 17" laptops. Serious travelers that is. They may be more on the content creation side of the spectrum, but they are there.

Apple has a little gem with the 17" Mac Book Pro. It doesn't have the heart stopping performance of the PC variants, but it also doesn't have that un-Godly weight either. That's a trade off that many do take. The 17" MBP is pretty light compared to the competition, which makes it pretty convenient to travel with.

I think with the 17” its more about finding a good bag. At first I had my computer in a borrowed backpack and it was uncomfortable and heavy but then I bought my backpack and it fit me well and everything was adjusted perfectly, so I stuck more stuff in the bag and it actually feels lighter then the previous bag I had. So far I haven’t travelled very far with it, a couple of 4 hour trips but that’s all. I guess I need to take a vacay. :p

Definitely. I have a 17" Toshiba Laptop that I travelled with before I got my MBP in November. I couldn't find any backpacks that could fit 17" laptops at Staples so I had to resort to a messenger bag... and not a pleasant experience. I'm pretty sure I have a permanent humpback arch now :p

After getting this MBP, I could carry it around with me EVERYWHERE! It's just so much more portable and light. One of my friends has an 17" MBP and it's much lighter than my Toshiba laptop (placebo effect?).

But it's true, as Digital Skunk said,

Good point. I had about three bags for my 15" that all fit my 17" MBP very well. I have two Swiss bags that fit the 17" perfectly, even with an Incase sleeve around it.

I am sure they made the bags to fit 15" PC laptops, which (depending on the model) are heavier than the 17" MBP.

What, Macbook Pro is the ultimate laptop :D

The point of this thread was to inform potential buyers who were considering Alienware laptops over a macbook pro.

Don't most users who choose a Mac, do it for the love of Mac OSX?

Yeah, there are some valid point to this.. Is it really so hard for people to choose and make up their own minds? Why is it so dam.n hard?

It's just like the waiters.... they put too much importance into the machine, and not what they do with it. I waited for Penryn and a redesign, but when the current machine came out I picked one up since I had work to do.

I pick Mac OS X because I have to run my favorite pro apps. I picked the MBP for the same reason. My hardest choice was 15" or 17". I got the 15" first, then regretted it slightly and picked up the 17" this time around. Very easy choice.

If I was a gamer, it'd be PC laptop all the way, or 17" and VMWare/Boot Camp.

The alienware would probably be better for gaming from the slightly higher spec video card, and also since its 2" thick it can have the GPU clocked higher.
