I have a macbook pro with a 2.66 ghz core 2 duo, 8gb ram, and 9600m gt...

thinking about buying the new 27" apple display...but then thought I could get 27" imac instead - and still use the display

The imac is a 2.93 i7, 8gb ram, and radeon 5750.

Will the new imac run significantly faster or will it be about the same as on the macbook?

I do alot of development in xcode, 3d modeling in modo, photoshop, games, etc...

Thanks for any advice...

Definitely a lot faster in 3D stuff, games and Photoshop. iMac uses newer CPU microarchitecture and has four cores while MBP has only two.

If you don't mind the substantially higher cost of the iMac as compared to the ACD, the iMac is going to be completely superior to your MBP in terms of speed and performance.
