Think of it like gears on your car. Your celeron is 1st gear, your Core2Duo is 5th gear. The Mhz/Ghz is your Rev counter.

In first gear at 3000rpm, you are going maybe 20-30mph. in 5th gear at 3000rpm your are doing 80. The speed of the engine doesn't determine how fast your are going, just how quickly the engine is turning.

Great analogy

The new 7200 drives are not hotter and also use no more power than the
5400's. But they do produce a little very high freq. vibration on the top of the laptop I had never noticed before. Just upgraded to a Seagate Momentus 7200.3 a few weeks ago.
Cool, that's good to know 🙂

I have the low end MBP with only 2 GB RAM. It works fine on just 2 but if I'm doing Photoshop and have a number of other programs running I can feel the slow down in processing speed. So its better to get Apple to install your RAM for you since the RAM being used for this model (SDRAM DDR3) isn't readily available last time I checked without a special order. Maybe in 6 months but it'll be pricey.

Thanks for the heads up, I'm definitely going to get apple to do the installs because I don't want to risk voiding warranty and stuff.
I'm thinking of getting the 2.5GHz version, 4GB RAM and 320GB 7200 rpm hard drive

You could also get the base model from the apple store and do the apple ram buyback option. You buy the MB or MBP, pay $150 within 14 days of purchase, Apple 'buys back' your computer, installs the 4 gigs and 'sells' you the computer back.

That way, you get apple ram with applecare, and a genius does it in the back while you walk around the mall for a bit.

Thanks for the idea, sounds pretty cool and will be making a big saving! but are you sure that would work here in the UK as well?

So let's say if I was doing video editing with really large files, is that the only time one would benefit from a 2.8GHz processor?

I can tell you that my base model 2.4 Ghz MBP, the one from immediately prior to the latest (October 2008) release, runs Photoshop CS3 very nicely. For the first time in recent memory, I'm never waiting for it. And that's with the base RAM. Any of the newest MBP line should be even faster.

Thanks a lot for that, you just sealed the deal! I've definitely made the right choice 🙂
