Seriously, if you need a MacBook Pro today, buy one today. The prices have never been better, the design is very well tested, the display is perfectly fine and there is no telling what might exist two years from now.
There's always a newer model just around the corner. If you wait you'll be waiting forever.

I get that but burn in is still a problem and honestly Mini LED is still better tech overall. There is a reason why Sony is going that direction and not OLED anymore. Until Micro LED is ready (which is still far off) Mini LED will be the king.

OLED is great but Mini LED wins overall

For security.

The Ultra Retina XDR displays used on iPad Pro have been almost universally praised, and the tandem OLED design means they get brighter than traditional OLED panels.

Sounds great, I will be about due for an upgrade for my M3 Pro MBP. I have to say, even though the notch has never really bothered me, to be able to hide the menu bar like I used to do pre-notch would make me very happy. With the notch and the way Mac OS works, there is no point in hiding the menu bar because you do not gain any usable screen at all. Instead you see a strip of your wallpaper above the window where the menu bar was. I still hide the menu bar when I am using external displays, but there is no point on the MacBook.

Honestly, I think it’s too early to say. Tandem OLED allegedly helps with burn on, so only time will tell.

Not sure. It can have a hole punch or maybe even a dynamic island in some form. Either way waiting for the redesign. Don't think the cellular version of MacBook will arrive with the M5 version. Maybe M6 in 2027 will have it.

Only for purchases. Other uses are automatic, for example opening the Journal app with Face ID doesn’t require any additional interaction
Purchases are obviously their own entity, and it makes sense there would be an extra layer of security. But if we’re talking about other actions whilst the device is already unlocked and in use, then yes the additional user authentication isn’t required because you’ve already made the choice to unlock said device.

And that’s a key point: to unlock the device, you must still make an active choice to wake it (via physical action); the Face ID authentication occurs automatically, and then the user must still make a physical action to ‘open’ the phone, which typically is swiping the bar up from the screen bottom.

Physical authentication will always be required in some format because it’s a way of confirming that the user is making a conscious decision to perform said action. It’s the equivalent of turning the key in a lock, but you must still choose to push the door or not.

I would love a Pro with an Oled screen and without a notch but I have an M1 Pro and I am not planning to buy a new one before 2027.

how is this any different than the physical action of lifting the macbook screen open?

Until Apple has active anti-burn-in techniques I don't want OLED for a screen which is on for most of the day displaying static information like the Menubar and Dock.
Same here. All the more reason for me to get a M5 MacBook Pro. I'll get a new one while they still have Mini LED displays. I love the Mini LED displays Apple uses.

No notch, thinner body, OLED display? This seems too good to be true... They have to ruin it somehow.

The first MacBook Pro models with OLED displays are still expected to launch next year.

Apple-MacBook-Pro-M4-hero.jpg

Omdia analyst Linda Lin reiterated the 2026 timeframe for the first MacBook models with OLED displays in a recent research note. While she did not mention the MacBook Pro specifically, it is widely expected that OLED displays will debut in the higher-end MacBook Pro models before the lower-end MacBook Air models.

When the MacBook Pro switches from mini-LED to OLED display technology, benefits will include increased brightness, higher contrast ratio with deeper blacks, improved power efficiency for longer battery life, and more.

Overall, the MacBook Pro is expected to receive its first major redesign since 2021 next year, with rumored changes including an OLED display and a thinner design. Apple will also be on to the M6, M6 Pro, and M6 Max chips by then.

In December 2024, Omdia intriguingly claimed that next year's MacBook Pro models will have a hole-punch camera at the top of the screen, instead of a notch. It is unclear if this rumor was accurate, or if that change remains on Apple's roadmap.

If you are considering purchasing a new MacBook Pro, it might be best to hold off until next year if you are able to wait. Apple will likely update the MacBook Pro line with the M5 series of chips later this year, but not much is expected beyond that spec bump. The more significant changes mentioned above should arrive by October 2026.

For a second there I thought I may hold out till the OLED Macbook Pro. But it doesn't actually matter to me. I always use Macbooks in clam mode anyway.

"Nobody wants FaceID or Cellular on Macs."
"Cellular and FaceID on iPads make perfect sense."

The strange 🥨 logic going on over at Apple.
I don't understand why they do what they do on some of this stuff.
Above this, you can unlock Mac with an iPhone / watch combo utilizing faceID already that Apple wants to hinder.
