MacBook Pro won't recognize external USB/IDE DVD Drive

I have an old Apple/Sony DVD-R IDE drive connected with an IDE to USB adapter, and then into my MacBook Pro. I''ve tried all the jumper settings, and the Mac won't see it. Ideas?
