My partner has an old, disused MacBook Pro, maybe 2013. I've decided to see if I can get it working.

The power button doesn't work. Sometimes when I connect the magsafe, it begins to start up. When I unplug the battery, it will reliably begin startup when I connect the magsafe.

Regardless, it only gets partway through the progress bar before shutting down.

  • I've gone through the steps to reset the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM, but no change.
  • I've done option-command-R to upgrade the OS. The appropriate screen did appear, the installation seems to have completed, but when returning to the startup screen, it still shuts down.

  • I cannot get into safe mode.
  • I got into recovery mode, but it shut down on the language selection screen.
  • I did the hardware test and it didn't return any errors.
Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Is it retina or non-retina?
Non-retina has a DVD drive slot on the right.
