What hard drive did you get? What interface are you using (USB, Firewire)?
    What MacBook do you have?

You could try to reset the PRAM:

After you shut down the computer, press the power button and immediately hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys simultaneously until you hear the startup sound a second time. This resets the parameter RAM (PRAM).

    Or reset the SMC:

If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
Press the Power button to restart the computer.

The SMC reset helped me recognizing external Firewire hard drives.

hi again sorry about the late reply ive been away.

anyway ive tryed both of them solutions and its still failing to read the drive.

its a Western Digital 120GB Passport V2 External USB 2.0 2.5" Hard Drive
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-120GB-Passport-External/dp/B000IAZ566

    Mac OS X 10.4.11, 2,16ghz intel core.

any ideas how to get it working? ive been thinking of re-formatting it on a pc but the drives full and i dont want to lose anything on it.
