Do you need to be a developer to use this? Is this similar to the Education Store? Those are some pretty nice discounts ;)
Yeah. You do. The Student Developer Discount, while it costs 99 dollars to join, gets you those discounts.

hey, i was going thru the same sort of laundry list of things when i was going to school last year. if you have a good backpack then stick with that but get a zip up skin bag for your laptop. its crucial since the form factor used in the pb/mbp likes to scratch easy. consider the following:

1. separate keyboard and mouse. cant stress this enough, totally crucial, tackpads suck

2. get a nice 2.1 speaker setup. the speakers on any laptop always leave alot to be desired

3. headphones for when you cant bump tunes loud

4. have a cat 5 cable for you desk and then get a small length one for portability.

remember, if you are getting a laptop dont be afraid to take it places. most kids who have laptops in college never take them outside of the room. basically, a bunch of computer-illiterate kids begged thier parents for a "cool" laptop but feel they will break it if it leaves the room. i didnt get apple care on my 17" pb b/c i couldnt afford it, and ive found i dont need it. im too careful with my laptop to hurt it myself and if it got jacked then i would just run after the culprit haha.

BTW, very important get a lock for your laptop

i was looking around at this and it seems like a one-time deal. maybe apple would lose too much money if it was more than once a lifetime...

Note that a determined thief could steal it:(

No, silly, he's using CS2 and top of the line Avid stuff:rolleyes:

Why couldnt he be? I run CS2 at my house. My high school runs CS2 on their eMacs and iMacs. My college runs CS2 on their iMacs, PowerMacs, and Dells. We run most of the Macromedia programs, some large excel files are pretty tough to work with, FinalCut Express is fairly intensive. Some high school and college kids have the need for Pro line equipment today. Id love a 13.3" MBP, in my mind it would be the perfect college computer, but I definetly have the need for a "pro" level machine.

As for what he needs, Id reccomend a good 2.1 speaker set or nice headphones as said before, a mouse, keyboard, a thumb drive wouldnt hurt, definetly a case or bag, apple care, Office, and maybe throw in a game or dvd or something fun. Pretty much the same stuff I'll be getting for my college computer.
