The sticks don't have to be matched. Just one of the 2GB sticks will be fine paired with the 1GB stick that is currently in the machine

Okay thanks, I hope this will breath some new life into my machine. I want to see if I can get at least one more year out of my computer.

I have the same MacBook and also asked about this: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1203872
Whilst that's true there is a small performance gain from using 2x2GB sticks.

That'd be nice. I'm wondering whether I can do the same with my MacBook. 2GB RAM really isn't enough for Lion.
