Apple DID NOT give me the option to take my device home. I submitted my MBP 2017 (15 in) for battery replacement on May 24 and the guy said it would take 5-7 days...got a call June 1 saying it would take 10-14 days. Still don't have it back. Called the apple store and they are only now asking the repair center to ship my computer back so that I can take it home with me while they order the part directly to the store. There was a complete lack of communicaiton from the Apple repair center and the Apple store. I'm a student and start school soon and am super worried I won't have a repaired computer by then.

That's why I do VMIs before ordering the parts and have my customers sign a form stating that additional damage from here on out is their responsibility.
Also, I make sure that they know that parts will be returned if they’re not going to bring the device back. Consumable parts like batteries are non-returnable and we will have to charge the full stocking fee if they decide not to complete repair.
All you can do really, although really you need to do a second VMI when it comes in in case anything has changed while it’s been away.

Dropped a 2017 MBP 15" for a battery replacement on June 13th. Even though the status doesn't show it. The Apple Store manager called me to let me know they are waiting for parts. Not in a hurry, but still a little annoying.
Maybe they'll give up and give me a bran new one or refurb, although I doubt they have refurbished 2017's ...

Why would any additional damage be their responsibility? Warranty should continue to cover what warranty covers, even when waiting for a part.

Here we are, nearly two weeks later and still no update as to when I can expect parts to arrive.

I’m lucky enough to have a Mini and a USB-C monitor, but that is by no means optimal or truly portable. Another week or two and this is going to become a significant headache.

The warranty does not cover ‘user-inflicted damage.’
Had a few situations where the customer broke something unrelated to the original issue while they were waiting for parts. They tried to blame the damage on our company.
If you come to us for a battery replacement, I'll check everything and take pictures before you take it home. If you come back and I find Liquid Corrosion on the Logic Board, you can't claim that I did it. I have the proof.

Out-Of-Warranty Devices…well Apple charges no matter what so :(

Interesting. My 14" MBP had keyboard marks on screen and they replaced the screen the same morning it was received and I received it the next day. I guess it just depends maybe.
