My brand new black MacBook just completely shut off after the warning that it would go to sleep in a few moments as the battery had run down. When I turned it back on it didn't start up from the sleep image (I guess it hadn't made one).

I reset the SMC, then tested it by letting the battery run down again. This time, it shut down immediately, but it did restart from a sleep image. But shouldn't it go to sleep first?

Interesting you link to a battery issue, as the battery is not flush with the bottom of the MacBook. Arggggg.....I just received this as a replacement unit and the last thing I want to do is get into repairs again......I'll call Apple, thanks for the link.
