anyone seen this thing floating around yet?

remove that optical drive, and replace it with more battery, and allow it to use another computers optical like the MBA, and sign me up!

This product will come out after apple releases snow leopard. It will have a superdrive and an app store. It is not impossible in fact it's very possible. it wont have gps and it will have a low price. I called it.

If apple cant get a superdrive into the macbook air, I fail to see how they can in this mystery device, also why? they've already stated you can get almost everything from the internet now-a-days,

I cant see the app store working because of the different resolutions, all the current apps are set to display at 320 x 240 (or something like that), I can't see them turning around and saying "you know all those iphone apps you worked really hard on, yeah, well, they need to be redone for this device"...

I'm guessing it wouldn't be called MacBook something though - the book part suggests a folding laptop form factor.

Apple gears themselves towards being a company dedicated to graphics professionals and such... I could DEFINITELY see where this would fit in if it was 10 -12 inches (a little smaller then the macbook and thinner - less power... closer to that of the air) throw some haptic feedback in there for when you need to type onscreen and STYLUS INPUT. If they could implement STYLUS input in there, maybe some other sort of feedback... I'd be drooling. I'm working on making a macbook tablet now, using a old waccom tablet, but if apple were to make something like this, i'd be all over it, and I bet a lot of people in graphics would too. Moving things around on screen with your hands and such is just a much easier interface to use then a mouse.

Sure, not a huge market, but it would definitely kick ass in a niche market like the air is.

Not to mention... with ebook sbeing on the app store now, throw in more of those and subscriptions to online magazines and such, and you got a huge competition for all the other ebook readers out there too.

I'll definitely buy one if they release it but only after the price comes down because I'm sure it will be too expensive at first just like the iPhone, MBA and most high tech items.

Yeah was in Stuff months ago.

Good mag, tad bit biased toward Apple though, I find.

Ooh, I hope they don't have haptic. I hate haptic  It never seems to act as they say it should. It just feels like a device that vibrates when I touch the screen to me. And how much money went in to the technology, again?

Ugh. Never, ever pay attention to anything you read or hear from Stuff Magazine. The most unabashed collection of Apple zealots ever... worse than us

I wouldn't go that far - it's an informative and witty read, if slightly biased.

What about a Desktop? Professional version?

Unless I've missed something, I've only heard people discussing 'ultra-mobile' and notebook touch computers. What about an iMac with a touch screen? I'd imagine there is a large base of professionals who would kill for something like this.

Imagine manipulating graphic art or photoshop with your hands on a 20"+ screen!

Also, possibly not a huge machine overhaul, just the introduction of monitors that have touch capabilities, for the afformentioned users. No change to the OS except a few gestures, just a monitor that acts like a big trackpad.

Thoughts?

That picture shows the problem with any touch-based laptop. How are you going to to use it? Crane your head over, or lift that heavy-looking device up to eye-level and try get a hand on the screen?

I hope the multi-touch development can figure out how to sense how hard you are pressing. Some really cool applications for music production if that's possible and i'm sure it would also open up a lot in terms of gestures.

Anyone know what's involved in detecting pressure with a touch screen?

I think Apple purposely removed the optical drive to make the MacBook Air.

I cant see the app store working because of the different resolutions, all the current apps are set to display at 320 x 240 (or something like that), I can't see them turning around and saying "you know all those iphone apps you worked really hard on, yeah, well, they need to be redone for this device"...
They could just work in floating 480·320 windows.

And the thing about that is, what would happen when the iPhone increases its resolution at some point in the future (or if another device with a bigger screen is released)? Apps would need to stay the same physical size, so there would need to be some sort of resolution independence built in to the apps or the OS.

It's also highly likely that the "MacBook touch" has a different DPI from that of the iPhone and iPod touch.

There would also need to be UI changes. Features that only require a mouseover (Dock magnification, Exposé blue highlight, Skimming, etc.) would have to be changed in some way because there's no "mouseover" with touch (unless the touchscreen was pressure sensitive and a very light touch meant a mouseover).

It's actually a rather large market with deep, deep, pockets.

Deep pockets yes, but it's still a small market compared to all of the others. The only one that may be smaller that it would be the film industry who couldn't use such a limited device.

People who want something new and shiny that serves little actual purpose.

Seems to be about right unfortunately. I feel that much of the consumer base just wants something "cool" to sink their greedy over spending teeth into, not that they actually need it. Goes along with the people that are clamoring for a MBP redesign, just for the sake of a different looking machine.

I would like a MBP redesign. I'd like the gray band to be removed, with a more solid seam. I'd like a magnetic latch, and I love the MB style keyboard (sorry) - both of these things require some amount of redesign. I wouldn't object to a slimmer look and feel, esp. if that makes it lighter and easier to cart around. And yeah, the next time I upgrade, a fresh look would be nice. Similarly, I can see the value of a touch tablet of the kind that's rumored. I would love to have something sitting next to me at work the same way I have a pad of paper sitting next to me. I can see a lot of value in that. Do I need it? Of course not. Personally, I don't really need a cell phone. Or a laptop. I could get by with a desktop. But they make my life more convenient and make it easier to keep connected with the things that are important to me. If we're going to split hairs, how much of what we use every day and take for granted do we really need? I'll spare you the rest of the Tyler Durden-esque speech.

I just don't think it's entirely fair to write off the people who see the value in a new product or service, or a fresh look on their hardware next time they upgrade as vapid consumers obsessed with coolness. Sorry, I'm not trying to be confrontational. It just gets to me when people make blanket statements like that when they're really only talking about very small segment of the group they're addressing.

You might be onto something there. Well the Apple Display hasn't been updated for 476 days, and the average update happens every 230 days. It would be nice if they introduced a touch screen as I'm sure a lot of graphic artists would love the idea.

fake fake fake.

Just look at how it's written! The "kitchen sink" rumors are always fake fake fake.

End of story.

Fingernail instead of stylus!!!

Well, I can't find it but there was an article recently on here about Apple researching fingernail input capabilities for their touch products. What if this new product is a tablet or macbook touch and instead of a stylus you can use your fingernail to write? I think that this sounds very probable. My theory is that this new product will be a tablet or macbook touch type device. I realize that this is an old rumor but frankly I think that there is a market for this type of thing. Also, like it has been said, the product would be costly to make but because of the prices they'll sell at, Apple will initially see a drop in profit margins. Once they start flying off the shelves then Apple's profits will increase to make up for the loss. This is my theory. I don't really care if you prove me wrong, it's just a theory.
