macbook unwanted noise

my macbook every couple of minutes emits a noise akin to something being scanned.....last about 5 seconds


any pointers much appreciated

Hard drive, mine is dead silent.

I would say hard drive too, and I wouldn't worry about it. I have that too.

i can hear my hard drive almost as if the fan is running at 2500 to 3000 rpm, but i never have the sound you hear.

Where's it coming from? Right side, left side, centre? Does it sound anything like the noise it makes upon startup which is the optical drive initialising?

sound comes from the center and yes does sound like the initialising sound
