I'm in need of an easily portable device for college. I already have a 27" 5k iMac that I'll be using as my "main" system, but I'd like to have something to take to class, as well as to have around campus.

I don't necessarily need a ton of heavy lifting. Primary use for the device will be school. If I go with a Mac of some sort, I'll also be dabbling in photoshop and Xcode while away from my iMac. If iPad Pro, it'll be used for a lot of digital art creation as well thanks to the Pencil.

Both the iPad with Smart Keyboard and MacBook come in around the same weight and size, with the iPad being a tad cheaper. Which is the better choice for a student that already has a powerful desktop?

I had this same debate; for me it's just that I don't like the interface of a touchscreen, particularly when I need to do something quickly (like taking notes in-class). Nothing ever seems quite as quick as a trackpad or mouse-based interface. There are a few students in my law school class who use iPads and I'm sure it works well, but I wouldn't give up the trackpad.

There is no comparison between the capability of the iPad pro and the MacBook. The MacBook is a MUCH better option for getting actual work done.

Ipad are for consuming media, browsing whatever. Real work needs a Macbook. If extreme portability is not your concern, than the new MBP might just works best for you.
