I agree with you in that regard. I have a 20" monitor too. Although for the last few months i've been working more and more just on the laptop itself and not connecting it up. So for me the MBP would be more desirable now than it was a few months ago.

well lads thanks again. Picked up a Mb pro in the end! lol, for the irish reading ;) o2 have 200 of the retail price, easy decision really!

I read that some of you guys won't get a MBP because of looks alone? That doesn't make much sense to me  Who cares how it looks (to some extent) as long as it runs well! I agree with everything snowmoon says.

I would pay the extra money just to have that 15" screen, 13" is too small for me.... :(

1. Get a Display

2. You could still use Pro Apps (except Motion) on the MacBook and Core Image and Video are supported on the MacBook.

3. Get a Display (again)

4. No difference

5. Who cares if you have lighting around you all the time

6. Use the Display's Matte screen for color accuracy work and glossy is good.

7. Who cares about this

8. So on the MacBook (not Motion I think)

9. Santa Rosa MacBooks with Intel GMA X3000 might support the 30" Display

10. MacBook's keyboard is a new design and feels more solid

11. You didn't miss anything else

Your post is funny. Who are you to tell from your needs what others need? Steve Jobs?

There are so many things that people need on a regular basis on the MBP. You might not agree but there are.

Just for example: I use the express card slot for a 3G modem to have broadband where no access point is available. I often am in dark places where there is sparse lighting, where the lit keyboard comes in very handy.
I transfer about 200GB twice per week, the FW800 I wouldn't want to miss.
And besides, since when can I carry a display around when I travel?

sorry to dig this up again, but with the dual display output - this is needed for 30" ACD's right, but can I hook up say 2 x 20" lcd's also?

Dual Display and Dual DVI (for 30") are different.

And no you can't hook 2 screens up without extra hardware.

these are the 3 main ones i am looking at
(they arent on the refurbed site yet, but were there a couple weeks ago)

my main question is this: is the C2D that much better then the CD?

i would mainly use the notebook for website site editing/building, photo editing and some minor video editing.
out of those 2 macs or any of the the mac lineup, what MAC should i get?

THANKS!!!

I can't say from personal experience (my Macbook is first-run CD), but I recall seeing benchmarks showing a 30% performance increase in C2D. I believe this is probably mostly due to the larger cache. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong!

For the needs you list, the video card in the MBP isn't a consideration because none of the above tasks really use it. So you're pretty much down to:

MBP CD
  • Larger screen
  • Backlit keyboard

versus

MB C2D
  • Larger hard drive, user upgradeable
  • Somewhat faster

Just figure out which of the above is more important to you.

thanks guys, bzgnyc that was a good post, I really don't know what to do, as when i'll be using this in a professional capacity it will be hooked up to a ACD ! still dont know aaarrrgggghhhhh!

I don't know which ACD you refer to but the MacBook can drive either the current 20" or 23" models. However, the 30" requires the Pro model (dual-link DVI).

I also forgot to mention the speaker on the MacBook sounds chincey and I don't like the glossy screen. However, I knew about the glossy screen going in and sound isn't issue for me.

Actually the LCD on my MacBook looks a little washed out, too. I liked the screen (and everything else) on the TiBook 1GHz/DVI best. My PowerBook G4 Al 1.25 started out with a good screen except for those spots. Later I got Apple to replace the screen due to the spots but the replacement wasn't quite as sharp -- there seemed to be more of a screen effect. On the MacBook, I can't find a good contrast setting so that the Finder folders retain a tint of blue. Sometimes its hard to see the yellow highlight in Excel. Playing with the ColorSync calibration helped but I haven't had time to do it right.

Do you need eSATA? Remember, no ExpressCard = no eSATA. Otherwise, do you need >2GB RAM, a 15" screen, dual-link DVI, or hardware accelerated OpenGL? If not, you don't need a MacBook Pro.

Somtimes I do feel like I went from a 2000 Cadillac to a 2007 Chevy, though. Will that be a problem for you? Then the issue is you want a MacBook Pro even though you don't need it. If so, just get the Pro. The extra money will be worth it just so you don't have to spend the next 2 or 3 years wishing you bought the more expensive model. We can't be rational about everything.
