MacBook won't recognize external hard drive

My MacBook won't recognize my LaCie external hard drive. Any suggestions? Thanks.

See if another computer recognizes it.

Does it show up in Disk Utility?
What connection (USB or Firewire) do you use?
Have you tried an SMC reset? Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

My external hard drive is having this problem as well. It's been fine for the past year and a half and now it's not showing up. This is terrible. I have 13,000 songs and about 100 movies/TV saved on it. What the hell can I do?
