Macbook Won't start up past white startup screen HELP!!!!

My macbook will turn on to the white/grey screen but the apple doesn't even appear. I have an important keynote pres on there. please help.
 
You can try booting into safe mode - hold down the shift key while it is booting, until you get to a prompt. Then type exit or logout and see it it continues the boot.

Sometimes booting into safe mode like this will clear things up.
