I do believe that the road ahead is paved with more Tarmac than Gold.
Well that only seems prodent, gold beeing soft and exspensive it is not a recomended material for baving purpuses :) But joing asside, iirc Apple has returned vay above avaragr the last cople of years, is it resnable for us to expectthis to continue oe shal we see somewhat deminished butt still good retutns in the future?

How can you be satisfied about a computer that overheats like a madman when doing anything remotely CPU heavy with a 480p camera and just one connector?

If you compare it to other ultra portable machines, sure, aluminium beats plastic, but as a product on it's own it's a long way from being any good.

The main reason is it runs OS X. Period.

Honda is overrated mediocre to junk cars that people have been told they are "superior". They made glass transmissions for years (00-06) and denied it. They have some serious issues with their V6's and deny it. Sorry, Honda is overrated junk.

And there are plenty of old Saturns running around. Usually the original plastic paneled ones. The engine in them runs a long while and the body, well, being plastic tends to hold up well.

Honda's sales were down (contrast to most others which were up this month) in the USA in November:
Honda auto sales decline in November - USA Today

I don't know about your experiences but I've had(and my family) have had around 20 hondas since 76
and they've all been exceptional! I have a 2007 Accord that I bought new and it has 102,000 miles on it
and it's had 2 unusual problems, a bad wheel cylinder and the starter went!
Ask anyone that has owned a number of Hondas, they most always go over 200,000 with very few problems.
No doubt though that they have had lemons as have every maker.

Meh, I suppose they are alright? I've bought three so far in my life. Haha

My guess is we are satisfied as you can still remove the bottom to clean them, not so much to update the ram or drives anymore though? Will be keeping a close eye on next year's update as my current one will be heading towards 6 years old! Split between another Pro MB or iMac hmm, I do use my laptop lounging around everywhere haha as well as my tablet.

I'm hopeful they keep the current design and update the internals including new discrete GPU.

In fact having a computer that still works fine 5 years on, is still updated and supported by the manufacture, the battery even still holds a charge, means I have no issue what so ever in replacing my Mac with another Mac, even if I had a Windows computer I would still have a Mac too.

The MacBook Pro is the machine everyone else has copied, it runs Windows better then a Windows laptop so people say...

I've maxed out the RAM and fitted a 512GB Samsung SSD, and it runs fine, one of the fans make a noise now and then, and the motherboard was changed by Apple for free as it had the dreaded Nvidia GPU failure, but that's all. So yeah apart from a faulty graphics chip known issue, and even that didn't start to fail until after 3 years, it's not missed a beat.

It has no moving parts apart from the screen hinge so quite reliable. But the keyboard feels like ****. I think many people who've taken part in this have rose tinted glasses, don't want to look foolish spending so much money on one of these. Just my opinion though.

Not arguing that macs are great computers..... my wifes 5 year old air is still going strong but CR is a turd and nothing they say should be taken as a worth while opinion. Simply google suzuki samurai vs CR and get all you need to know.

The biggest takeaway from that article is that Gateway still exists. o_O

THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT! I thought they closed their doors years ago!

That was my first thought too. The last time I saw a Gateway Computer was around 1999/2000, they launched here in 1994 and had been quiet popular for premium workstation PCs. If I remember correctly they only sold PCs in (big) towers and also monitors that were branded Gateway too.
The father of a friend had one at home. I think they were to expensive for most people to use it as a home computer.

Just read on Wikipedia that they stopped production and distribution in Europe and South Asia in 2001 and since 2007 they belong to Acer.

... Only complaint I have is when on desk, the desk has to be near flat, else MacBook sits on less than four points of contact. It is an annoyance more so than a complaint...

Hehe, I love that your main complaint is that your desk isn't built to the same high specifications as your laptop ;)

Before my head explodes and I become convinced humanity is doomed, let me be sure I understand this. Apple makes a computer that has a level bottom intended to be placed on a flat surface. You have an uneven surface and are pissed off because apple didn't think about your warped situation and create a computer for you to accommodate your warped desk.

I wish you the best.

He, he. You sly Microsoft person, you.

My MacBook Pro has been a hot turd ever since installing El Capitan.

Not having much experience with a "hot turd", is it a good thing or a bad thing?

I actually had 2 logic board failures on my 2011 MacBook Pro. Apple replaced it with a 2013 rMBP, which had to have a logic board replacement because it's thunderbolt port was too loose to stay connected.

I don't have the best track record, but they are still my preferred system.

That's good news. If the rumor about a 13 to 15 in macbook is true, I would be very open to upgrading my outstanding Macbook Air.

RMb is amazing, just doesn't have the right ports for me. But good job Apple on the quality reports!

Great, all those people are much luckier than I am. I've never had a Mac without some hardware component failing within 3 years, nor has my mom, dad, or brother. And I treat my machines with utmost care. So my family is at 100% failure rate so far, the way the survey measures it. Actually, all our crappy old Windows-based PCs have been holding up much better.

It is sort of amazing that Apple has never really taken gaming seriously. I have never really understood this oversight. But things can always change.... as they always do.

As long as DirectX has a stranglehold on the PC gaming market, Apple is not going to do much about gaming. Maybe if Vulkan unifies Windows, Linux and some consoles, but Apple has already gone with Metal. Once again, we are going to end up with a MS standard, an Apple standard and an open source standard (like desktops and mobiles).

This is why in terms of periodic cost of ownership, Apple computers tend to be less expensive than Windows PCs. A Macbook will last 6+ years easily. How many Windows PCs bought 6 years ago (likely running Vista) are still chugging along as well as a 2009 Macbook of some kind? Divide the cost by the number of months of reliable service, and a Mac comes out like a great deal most of the time.

Yes, but most people think in the short term (with most things) and just see the sticker price.

Unfortunately since Apple started soldering everything, I just don't think people will hold onto them for as long as before. And with the bump in compulsory upgrades at the time of purchase too...

Macs are definitely on the expensive end now.

Put me down for a Macbook Air 13 inch, 41 trouble-free months!

Thank You Steve, Thank You Apple !!!!!!!!!!
Well I gotta say. Mac Pro 1,1. 2006 model.
Still working now and in every other day use as a media server. Over the years I’ve had a hard drive fail, (I’d put that down to normal wear and tear), an optical drive fail, (I’d put that down to Apple crap - it works on older OS on the same hardware), and some RAM fail, (again wear and tear).
When it was my daily driver it was on every day from 0500 till approx 2100 and slept at other times. Any other problems have been software.

It’s a cliché but they don’t make 'em like they used to.
By the way, I’ve also have a cheap, (VERY cheap), PC that is older and still working fine if with that awful Vista. It certainly doesn’t get the use that Mac does but it isn’t bogged down, erratic and slow like lots of these non actual PC users claim that it must do.
It has virtually no third party software and no anti virus.

@ OneMadRssn:
Do you mean regular PC or one that costs the same as a Mac?
There is a significant difference. By the way, when I say one that costs the same as a Mac I mean another premium model. Example - I could spec a Vauxhall Insignia @ £26,829 to cost more than a standard BMW 318i SE @ £24,975 but it probably still would not be considered premium so it’s not as simple as speccing it up.
Let’s compare Apples with Apples shall we?

Are they counting purely hardware reliability?

If so, it sounds like the most reliable Windows computer is a Macbook running boot camp.

In my experience, Macs ARE the best Windows computers. But maybe that's just me.

My wife's work-issued laptop is a Dell XPS13 ultrabook, widely regarded as the best non-Apple laptop. It is a VERY nice machine. Smaller than my 13" MacBookAir, higher resolution 13" touch display, but slightly thicker. Weight is about the same. But despite the Dell's better specs, I still prefer my MBA.

It is that one machine that has all of Apple's best qualities, which truly makes it greater than the sum of its parts.

There is a known issue, which is covered under their Repair Extension Program:
https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

If you paid, you may be reimbursed by Apple.

In my experience, Macs ARE the best Windows computers. But maybe that's just me.

I would disagree. They function, but the drivers are sub-par. Stable usually, but sub-par.

Consumer Reports is great because they say MacBooks are good. Consumer Reports is irrelevant and nobody uses them when they don't recommend the iPhone.
Wrong and false.
CR classified as highly recommendable both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S series. They even put down the ridiculous #bendgate issue. Last time CR didn't recommend an iPhone was in 2010 (iPhone 4), like 5 years ago.

You are acting like a blind Apple basher lately, I personally think it's a pity ....

with the existing repair program regarding 2011 MBP, you could request for a total replacement after the third repair.
There are a few users here that received a 2015 MBP after multiple repairs... Try it.
