I always like a good sleevecase. Years ago when the first iPad came out, I had the WaterField designs Sleevecase. I sold that when I sold that iPad. The iPad 2 came out, and I got a Dodo case rear leather protector with the Smart Cover for the front and used a WaterField Designs Smartcase which was their sleeve with leather sides and front pocket. I used that for every iPad until the 11 inch came out, it finally met its match. For some odd reason Waterfield discontinued it. I tried another Sleevecase, I liked that it had a slot for the Apple Pencil. Great concept, but every time I opened the flap, the Pencil fell out. Unfortunately I had to return it.
Looking around for its replacement, I came across a video review of the MacCase Premium Leather iPad Pro Sleeve. The guy reviewing it LOVED it. I looked at it online and really liked the style, especially that slot in the middle for the Apple Pencil protecting it when not in use, and very accessible when I needed it. I called the number and spoke with the owner about my concern regarding the fit for the 11 inch with Smart Keyboard folio, and my concern on if the Pencil will slide out like the WaterField case. He assured me the Pencil would fit fine, and the case may be initially snug on the iPad with keyboard, but it should break in quick. I placed the order, it arrived 2 days later.
I saw the quality of the leather immediately when I opened it. Nice, soft, and ever so slightly stiff needing a little break in. Opening the flap, the interior has a nice soft lining with padding underneath to keep the iPad protected. The top sides have the interior seam which concerned me at first as that was initially stiff and made it a little difficult to insert the iPad. Knowing leather products and accepting there is always a break in, and that process involves the leather to naturally mold to the contents inside it. The center pocket for the Apple Pencil was also stiff, and it was just snug enough to keep the Pencil from sliding out. The flap on top has 2 flat circular magnets sewn in and find their place naturally when you close and secure the flap.
It took just 2 days, but the leather softened up and broke in around the iPad pretty fast. As the leather broke in, the 2 seams I was concerned with on the side gained a lot of flex, and is no longer an issue at all. I’ve had this sleeve for just over a month, and it is now getting it’s attractive vintage looking Patina look that creates the personality what I love about leather. Like the WaterField Sleevecase before it, this is not a cheap sleeve. But the quality you get out of this leather is going to last forever, protect the iPad well, and age like a well worn boot. I’m looking forward to owning and using this case for many years, and hopefully as future generations of iPads maintain similar size, enjoying it for many future generations of iPads too.
