Hi, I have an old Macintosh II that someone gave me. It powers on but when it gets to the gray screen right upon startup, it hangs there and never shows the "?" Anyone knows why it does this? What can I do about it? Thanks. :apple:

Yes i sure have. The computer has no hard drive. only a floppy. im mostly sure the floppy disc drive works fine. do you think it could be something with the hard drive? (or lack thereof)

It should still flash the blinking question mark regardless of hard disk presence. Though maybe that did not exist yet on the Mac II.

Have you tried replacing your PRAM battery?

Solving Mac Startup Problems

Hi, i actually took apart the computer completely. the black plastic holder for the PRAM batter has snapped off. there is sooo much rust and corrosion on and around the logic board where the battery sits. the battery itself is very rusted; my guess it bursted. Im likely going to have to replace the logic (mother) board. i wonder why it still shows that gray/white screen still. thanks.
