and where do i get S6 for downloading ?

Believe it or not, straight from Apple!

http://download.info.apple.com/Appl...n/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_6.0.x/

What you want are the two SSW_6.0.8-1.4MB_Disk images. And you're right, you can easily get 6.0.8 onto one floppy. There are two images mainly for extra drivers, Appletalk, 32-bit Quickdraw, and so on. This was the last OS Apple wrote in assembly, so it's much, much faster than System 7, and surprisingly more useful than you'd think. Do some searches for System 6 and you'll find a number of handy sites.

i know i have somewhere all the OS's since 6 until the 9 that i've downloaded from the apple website lolol. All i have to do is to transfer to floppy disks.

Going old school! :D alriight!

yeah i know they should be, but they were already hard to find lolol.

Yeah i know what that is, here in my country i've seen the most horrific prices for iMac's G4 / eMac's / iMac G3 / iBooks, even Macintosh classic/se

for example, i've seen iMac's G4 between 250$ - 625$, a eMac for 781$, iMac's G3 and some ibooks between 75$ - 250$ (the ibook more in the 250$ side) and a guy asking 250$ for a Macintosh SE. i don't know if the prices are the same there but here....are just simply nonsense. the most incredible prices that you can't imagine lol just because they are beautiful or whatever they all want a big chunk.

about the blah blah blah, don't worry dude :D

this way i practice spoken and written english, and also it's the best way of clear up our doubts and get more knowledge, aint it ? so, keep it coming :D

i'v seen people charging £350 for windows 3.1:D most people ill give you discs of 3.1 for free

WHAT!??? for win 3.1??? ohh yeahh that's top of the line software lol people are getting greedy

yep i once had a 486 laptop and needed to reinstall win 3.1 and i found people charging £350 for 3.1, but in the end my dad got me a set of dos 6.2 and win 3.11 discs for free from his work

Slow thinking these days: if i install OS 6 will the apps from my OS 7.5 something work or do i need to hunt down OS 6 apps ?

If I can not use OS 7 apps then I will not bother because most if not all are midi/audio applications.

In other words there is no big deal or advantage about running a text application in OS 6.

At the moment I can't think of a method of doing a back up of the OS 7.5 before installing OS 6.

If there's no easy way to do a backup, I'd just install 6.0.8 onto a floppy and try it out that way. Boot to the floppy, then try out some of the applications you have running under 7.5. Some might work, some might not. And this way you can easily just throw in the 6.0.8 floppy if you feel like playing around with it.

Another option, if you have enough RAM for it - is to create a RAM Disk and install 6.0.8 onto the RAM disk. You'll lose the installation if you shut your computer down, but it's amazing to see a Mac boot to the desktop in mere seconds. :)

...At the moment I can't think of a method of doing a back up of the OS 7.5 before installing OS 6.

There's another way to do this.

Boot from a System 7.5 floppy and open the "System Folder" on the hard drive. Create a new folder there and drag the file "Finder" into it. You can call this folder anything. I usually call it "Finder Disabled". ;)

Now, again on the hard drive, create a new folder and drag "System Folder", "Applications" "Documents" and "Apple Extras" into it. These are the folders that are ALREADY on the hard drive.

Now boot up from a System 6 install disk, select the internal hard drive and install. You will now be able to boot from System 6 using the hard drive.

To re-instate the System 7, perform the above steps with the System 6 "System Folder", disabling the System 6 Finder and drag the System 7 items back to the root level of the hard drive and finally, put the System 7 finder back in it's original location.

What you're doing here is resetting the "System Folder Pointer". Behind the scenes, when the computer wants to boot an OS, it looks at the system folder pointer which tells it which folder number (yes, they're numbered) to find the System file.

It can get a little scary, but this does work. I always disable the current System First and move it's location otherwise the System installer will either follow the "blessed" system folder if you only move it or it will over-write items in the system folder of the same name if you only disable the finder.

A System Folder that is not blessed won't have the MacOS icon on it. One that IS blessed will have the icon. (I suspect this only applies to system 7 and higher IIRC).
