Macbook Pro 16" connected through USB-C cable to a HUB which is then connected over displayport to a monitor. Clamshell mode results in audio loss over the USB-C cable, opening up the macbook resume audio playback over displayport. This used to work fine before 11.3.

Can confirm: MacBook Pro 16", two-port USB-C dock. Sound from displayport is not working since 11.3 update.

USB-C to displayport works but displayport to displayport lacks audio, both work under bootcamp so definitely a 11.3 issue.

Same problem. My 16" MBP connects to my monitor over USB-C, and my headphones connect to my monitor with a 3.5mm audio jack. Audio worked fine until upgrading to macOS 11.3.

Still broken in 11.3.1. 16" MBP, Dell P2415Q, StarTech CDP2DPUCP.

Same problem here, took some time to find out that macOS 11.3 update seems to be the problem, wanted to blame my new monitor first. Audio via USB-C doesn't work, only works if I use a Displayport cable and a USB-C adapter on the MacBook, but then again I get no PD, USB hub, network etc. so not a solution...

Not working: MacBook Pro 16" <-> USB-C cable <-> Dell U2721DE
Working: MacBook Pro 16" <-> USB-C to DisplayPort adapter <-> DisplayPort cable <-> Dell U2721DE

Hey Tobi,

So you are able to get audio from the monitor while in clamshell mode in the second scenario? Can you share what adapter you are using? I have this one from StarTech, I wonder if it's something with the adapter.

I was using this Lenovo USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter for testing and sound was working. However, I'm not using it right now since I wanna have power via USB-C which obviously doesn't work via DisplayPort, so I'm sticking with the normal 3,5mm headphone jack on the MacBook until Apple fixes the issue...

I couldn't find the specific Lenovo one you linked, so I got one from Dell. Still no audio. Not sure what the difference is. Maybe the monitor itself? But not willing to go replacing my monitor just to test it out.

Hmm, if your adapter does support audio channels it should work. I still hope that Apple will release an update that fixes the whole thing soon...

I mean the thing is, it worked before 11.3, so I don't really know what changed. I agree, hope in a future update, it gets resolved. Thanks for your help.

Anyone tested this in 11.5 yet to see if the issue is fixed? Been frustrating me to no end since I upgraded from Catalina.

Installing 11.5 right now, I can give an update if anything changed, but tbh I don't think so...

UPDATE: still not working with 11.5 as expected

I upgraded to 11.5 and on the first reboot after installation IT WORKED! I then unplugged the monitor, did some work in another room, came back and plugged the monitor in - the system crashed as normal - and it hasn't worked since :(

Still broken on 11.5.1 as well.

Very frustrating that my personal M1 Mac Mini works perfectly and my work-issued 16" MacBook Pro has been broken for months with the same OS builds, monitor, and cable.

I'm having the same issue.
Im connecting my MBP 16" 2019 to my Belkin Thunderbolt 3 dock using a single thunderbolt 3 cable. This dock in turn is connected to my Dell UP2516D monitor by Displayport.
Video is working fine, just no audio over DP.
Connecting to the very same dock with my Dell XPS is giving me no trouble at all, audio is fine.
Connecting directly from my MBP to the monitor using a USB-C to DP cable is also working fine.
It seems DP audio passthrough has broken.
I hope this will be fixed sometime, right now it's not for MacOS 11.5.2.

I'm having the same issue on MacOS 11.5.2 also. I upgraded from Catalina to Big Sur. It was working with my 16" Macbook Pro -> HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 -> Displayport cable -> ASUS PB287Q 27" Monitor. The audio for my monitor was working in Catalina but no longer works in Big Sur. I haven't tried with USB-C to Displayport cables yet but I imagine it would work since others have said it does and my Mac was working with my monitor previous to the Big Sur upgrade. Like others, I'm hoping a future update fixes it. I've tried other threads to create a new color profile and change the resolution but still no luck. It seems to be a specific audio issue.

Here's hoping monterrey will fix it come monday as it is really annoying to have been ignored all this time.

In case anyone is looking for a fix for this, in addition to Monterey 12.0.1, Switching my monitor to DisplayPort 1.2 instead of 1.4 fixed this for me.

Macbook Pro 2021
macOS Monterey 12.6
AOC U27 monitor connected through USB-C (changing/DP) cable.
Same issue until l changed my monitor DP setting from v1.2/v1.4 to v1.1, then there is sound now!
I suppose there is incompatible protocol hardware issue, since no such problem with my MacBook Pro 2015 & 2019.
