Keeping its integrated GPUs competitive with Nvidia, AMD et al may finally be the jolt that makes Apple institutionally interested in gaming.
the tragedy is that Apple has the most energy efficient GPUs in the industry. But their drivers and API support are terrible and they show no interest in maintaining back compatibility. And even in the rare circumstance where Apple does throw a lot of resources behind a developer they can't seem to get good results, for example Control on Mac is less stable than it is on SteamOS even though the former is a direct port and the latter must go through a bunch of translation layers. Apple could provide a better experience by following in Valve's footsteps, focusing on providing high quality translation layers that make porting automatic, but they don't want to do that because they instead want full ports published to the Mac App Store where they take a portion of the revenue. Apple's Game Porting Toolkit has shown that it's easy to run most games through a compatibility layer and that the holdup is that publishers simply can't justify spending the time to create and support a separate Mac version. Apple is ignoring this reality.
