bondy iMac speed bump

Hi!
I just can say that on my wifes iMac 233 the speed increased impressively.
The previous 9.1 was a snail against 9.2.1!

iBook

I just installed 9.2.1 onto my iBook. Installation was clean, but I've been playing around for about 10 minutes and can find no discernable difference. Eh. No worries.

i installed 9.2.1 last night from 9.1 and now my volume keys on my keyboard work totally differentlky, and in fact only control the volume in iTunes. the volume bar doesn't come up on the bottom of the screen at all. wtf?

I have a Quicksilver 733 with OS 9.2. Whenever iTunes is running, the volume keys conrol the volume in iTunes only. When iTunes is closed, they act the same as in OS 9.1.

Is this true with yours too?

Open SimpleText after waking from sleep and it takes about a sec to read each character typed into the text field. IE slows down, it seems like there is a huge problem here. I don't know if it's releated somehow to a memory leak or a really bad piece of code someplace which is killing the processor after waking up or what...

has anyone else noticed a super slowdown after waking up?

i always set my Mac to sleep when I'm not using it, to save on Restart time. but now it seems like i have no choice but to shut down a lot now.

this is happening every time too - wasn't a fluke thing. like clockwork, sleep kills my Mac.

This is pissing me off.

Re: MAJOR problem with 9.2.1

I noticed a slow wakeup in my powerbook G4. I called apple about it and they said that 9.2 will wake up slower. Nothing to be done. Today, I also noticed a hang in outlook express when I run it after in sleep too. Probably get the same answer. Anyone else have this problem?

Crawling After Sleep

yes, this has been a problem for me under 9.1 and 9.2 on both a G3 yosemite and a G4 Sawtooth and an 8600/300. I think apple should address this, cuz it doesn't happen on my Quadra 660's running 8.1 😉

After a day of having 9.2.1 installed..

It's been a whole day using 9.2.1, and I must say, it is much faster than 9.1 was under the Classic layer. Running aps in Classic mode under 10.0.4, the speed increase is *very* noticable. My Gawd, even Photo Shop is running at fullspeed now, no pokey windows etc.. totally instant response! I really can't tell the difference between Photoshop under 9.2.1 native, or under 10.0.4 using Classic mode... I'm impressed!
This is why we needed 9.2.1.. ;D

That's how it worked under 9.1, on my iBook.

9.2.1 speed increase data...

I did pre installation and post installation tests of 9.2.1 on 400 and 500 Mhz iMacs to see how 9.2.1 affects Classic Mode load time under 10.0.4 .. the results were not too stellar. Times listed are in minutes:seconds.

400 Mhz 9.1 Classic launch: 1:15
500 Mhz 9.1 Classic launch: 1:14

400 Mhz 9.2.1 Classic launch: 1:15
500 Mhz 9.2.1 Classic launch: 1:14

Well, there you have it.. it doesn't change loading time one bit.. at least for the Classic layer anyways..

What it DOES do however, is significantly boost the speed of applications! So, YES, it is worth the upgrade if you want to run the current version of PhotoShop (non-Carbon/non-Cocoa) at like 9.x native speed! It really has boosted the usefullness of heavy resource hogging apps.. Specifically, before I found Photoshop to be nearly unusable.. Now it's just like running it under System 9.. To cite a dramatic example, now a Command+Q gets an instant exit from Photoshop, less than 1 second to completely disappeared. 🙂 Before, under 9.1 classic mode, it would take up to 10 seconds to shut down, spending about 2 seconds to close each photoshop tool window..

The unmentioned pre-install step...

Is to make shure to disable any extensions related to Ati Multimedia. This will prevent 9.2.1 from starting up. 9.2.1 installs it's own drivers without disabling old ones. I wen't through many a trouble shooting step before i nailed the conflict.

I'm very suprised

I can't believe all the positive comments on 9.2.1, unless you have completely gone to OSX there really is absolutely no reason to trash a perfectly good 9.1 system.
I installed 9.2.1 on 3 computers, G3/300, Pismo500 and ibook500 and it sucks BIG TIME on all three, major slow downs, my tower drops to a crawl after about 10 minutes of use, I thought maybe the RAM (768MB) might be a problem so I switched over to my Pismo and it took about 15 minutes and I was in wait mode again, same story with the ibook. I suffered for 2 weeks and reverted back to 9.1.

On the positive side classic mode in OSX was much improved, which is really what the main intention of this update was.
