It seems easier to find such usage stats for mobiles, but do you know where to find (hopefully per-country) application usage stats for OSX? For example, how much is Photoshop used on OSX vs any/all other apps on the same platform?

Should be self explanatory why this is incredibly useful data.

The only app like this I've been seriously testing so far was:
https://timingapp.com
Great app with some learning curve and definitely worth to check out!

And there are others that I didn't test:

https://manytricks.com/timesink/
https://www.manictime.com

Thanks for the list, will check them out, but OP wants something along the lines of "how many people use Office 2016 on OSX in US, GER, UK, CH, etc".

Don't think that will be easy to come by as that would need to come from software developer and most are not too keen on providing too much data for competitive reasons.

Ahh, I see! I should have read the question more carefully.

Even if such a list would exist, that would only be estimations. Many people are using firewall apps that can prevent sending usage statistics. @NoBoMac, you're right, most apps are sending stats directly to developers, but there are also some apps using some third-party service like google analytics (probably web apps with a desktop wrapper like electron).

Maybe it's easier to find app sales statistics per country. Again, not exactly what the OP asked, but there are at least companies tracking app sales: https://www.statista.com/topics/1729/app-stores/

Very unfortunate that Apple doesn't publish this data. It could help app developers a huge degree decide on how to grow without having to be 100% self-reliant with market research & data (that only larger companies could justify the expense of gathering!). Common Apple! :(

No pun intended, but, apples/oranges.

App Store, Apple has complete control over, so they have a complete view of what's going on. And they do share that information via rankings, regular reports re: how many apps downloaded, break downs on which categories are the big sellers, etc.

Mac programs, yes, Apple has a Mac App Store, but many programs are not on there (for example, a big one, I believe Photoshop is not in the Mac store). Additionally, users can disable sharing analytics with Apple, so, nothing is sent back to Apple to analyze re: what programs are installed, how often used, etc.

So, on Mac, Apple has an incomplete picture of how a Mac is being used.
