Add in further extending security measures that make access to root difficult for third-party apps such as TotalSpaces (a great utility I’ve used since Apple ditched ”Spaces” but requires root access - normally I always disable SIP and GateKeeper yet I take other precautions and average consumers should not do so unless they are aware of the risks, etc), Catalina and Big Sur are just headaches.
Big Sur doesn't have Spaces? To me, your comment implies Apple "ditched" the feature in the past. Catalina includes Spaces, though it has been poorly crammed into Mission Control thus initial configuration/enabling is confusing and clumsy compared to macOS versions that touted the capability.

Apple already forced us to convert from Dashboard to the sidebar-style Today widgets, which are okay but certainly not as convenient in serval cases as the fullscreen Dashboard.

I'm not going to be happy if Spaces is gone and I need to do a physical multi-monitor setup.

Apple removed the grid overlay of Spaces years ago for the current implementation that is clumsy. I’ll find a link. The Spaces of yesterday was a superior version.

Here’s a link to TotalSpaces and what Spaces used to do:

I used the latest version with beta 10 and it was fine.
PhaseOne specifically recommends against upgrading to Big Sur until they release and update for it, and I’m not going to risk a mission critical application just to play with the new bells and whistles. I’ll stick with Mojave a little longer.

That being said, I’ve been testing Big Sur on a secondary drive for months, and it seems way more stable than Catalina ever was for me, so once C1 is updated I’ll have no problem upgrading.

Catalina is still showing. I doubt one would need to install it before Big Sur. Skipping one version is not a big deal. I usually skip tow between upgrades.

That must have been a few major macOS versions ago because I don't recall it at the moment. Even so, I guess, I've adjusted. Besides having macOS auto-shift to the appropriate Space when selecting an app/window, I use the key combo Control + left (arrow) / right (arrow) to move among them.

I still have yet to see any reason to upgrade. Big Sur seems like a big pile of **** imo. Yet another mediocre release by a increasingly irrelevant company.
Actual Reaction: Says he, a "newbie", without stating the reason *why* with some other totally unbiased observations. No real reason for you to be here, then, right?

Hoped for Reaction: Oh man, you're absolutely right! Big Sur is s***! Thank god you showed up, man. I almost wasted my time downloading and upgrading. Thanks to you, I've realized my error in judgment and will never buy another Apple product again based on your wonderfully shrewd and insightful observations!

Here's a quick question. I'm still running on Mojave. Will I be able to upgrade straight to Big Sur or will I have to install any previous OS before I can install Big Sur?
Yes. My 2014 Mac Mini (still on Mojave) just popped up a notification in Software Update advising me to upgrade directly to Big Sur.

EDIT: Since typing this, the download has progressed from 0 to 2.4 GB, with an estimated finish that had been about 10 minutes. And then the slowness kicks in. It just cannot get past that ~2.4 GB point.

Are there any direct download links you can get an image of the update? I know Apple used to offer these, but not sure if they still do. Their downloads are usually lighting fast, but the OS updater keeps failing today.
