How difficult would it be to switch to something documented and endorsed by Apple
Difficult. Apple SDKs typically provide about half the information and features, and are way more cumbersome to use than operating on the data store directly.

Apple removes features from their software products that professionals rely on, yet they continue create hardware with pro in the name. 🤔

It's also driving my ram nuts, somehow iTunes is using 25gb of ram, and then jumping to 50? This is a 24gb machine. I never had any of these issues in the Catalina beta.

Apple removing features can be annoying at times, but they certainly are under no obligation to support something that they never documented as a feature, but rather simply used as an underlying storage medium in an older app. That is an inherent risk of using undocumented or private APIs.

Of course they all tried the beta to see if this would happen to their custom apps before installing Catalina. Yawn

this has nothing to do with using itunes to DJ. it's regarding giving your DJ software, like Serato DJ, access to your iTunes library, where you may or may not maintain your music library.
Well, they have provided API access for years, so these DJ apps shouldn't still be using this hack. Besides they have had 4 months to fix their apps.

Apple's habit of intentionally breaking things without warning anyone first is not one of their better qualities.
These apps were relying on a hack, when there was an api access available.

Thumbs down for those DJ who uses iTunes for playing tracks... that's not real DJ

Professional DJ apps use iTunes for library management, assuming - often correctly - that DJs will source a lot of music from iTunes. iTunes for all its faults is also more user-friendly for library management tasks than some of their baked-in solutions.

Right. And some people might be too busy working to play around with beta OS versions, yeah?

One would assume Serato et al - wishing to sell software that works on modern operating systems - would at least keep abreast of these developments. It’s on them, not Apple, and not users.

Another example of Apple out of touch with their user base.

Incorrect. Catalina addresses the bloat and performance issues users have complained about for years. They are explicitly in touch with their users by finally addressing this problem. The companies whose DJ apps ignored years of API support for accessing libraries are the ones out of touch with their user base.

FYI - The latest beta of serato supports the new Music app, however I'm not getting any of my playlists to show up.

I'd say 90 percent of the DJs I know use Macs, so this is a big deal. It would be like if the new OS broke Adobe CC...

And yes as others have said, I use all of this software to earn a living as well. Obviously it's not compulsory to upgrade but I'm sure many of us would like to.

Additionally, Roland products that work via USB cannot connect in Catalina, so this represents an even larger segment of the music industry than just DJs.

i was clarifying for the one who thinks DJs are using itunes. i’m not sure why you just explained that to me. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Utter hogwash. Especially in this situation.

From what I gather, the new Music App does have an API, it'll be interesting to see if the DJ vendors adopt it.

The API is not new (it's been final release for 3 or more years). It's been around and documented. One of the apps you mentioned has already transitioned over to the API. The API has nothing to do with the new Music app. It's something built-in to the OS. The new Music App probably uses the same API.
