this is for users that knows how to disable the bar at the bottom without disabling basic functions of macos

as you know, this is the design problem:

'Can anyone tell me if it is possible at all to hide the dock permanently (so that it never shows up)? ...having continuously to be careful not to bump on the dock unnecessarily.

And, the Dock does pop up all the time, sometimes repeatedly. very annoying! If the Dock is at the bottom and I try to reach the bottom of a window, popping-up comes the dock. If I place the Dock vertically, while I try to reach the HD or my desktop, popping up comes the dock. Not to mention when I click on an application which I do not wish to open, I just have to sit and wait it open just to quick it. Too much time consuming dealing with the dock...

this is from someone in 2009 -- https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2114879

instead of explaining it again, i just quote it cos it's good. i typically/usually just link, but quoted it to help out

here's how i'd explain it tho:

* the bar at the bottom in macos, win10 and anything else that does it this way is bad (cos it prevents & hinders the free use of the mouse)

* aka: desktops do not use space (and i pray for the golden days of computing AR)

there appears at least in the past to not be any solutions but maybe there is a current one

from 2015

* it seems you cannot disable/block the bat at the bottom without disabling other basic functions/stuff about the os that are commonly used

* https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-completely-hide-or-remove-the-Dock-in-Mac-OS-X-Yosemite

from 2011

* answer says it 'may' break things, tho it seems like it actually will instead of 'may'

* https://superuser.com/questions/277996/how-to-modify-remove-the-bottom-bar-in-mac-os-x

those links were from a long time ago, there's likely a user that knows of a good solution in 2018

to the goal of how to disable the bar at the bottom without disabling basic functions of macos

You could connect a second display (or a headless ghost display adapter), disable display mirroring, and then set the dock to appear vertically on the left/right edge (if the 2nd display is arranged left/right of the main). That way the dock will never appear on your primary display.

Alternatively you could try disabling automatic hiding and minimizing the dock size. The dock would then always take up space but should no longer take you by surprise when trying to click near the screen edge.

ideals are lights years at a distance,

what's the minimal pixel that is possible for the bar at the bottom?

does that permanently hide it without leaving a placeholder? cos the bar at the bottom is something built into the os

cant find a screenshot on the site. if so how did you find out about it?

If you were asking me...I think it hides it until you change it back with Onyx (or Terminal, I would presume).

I tested that OnyX hiding the Dock. It appears to keep the Dock off. Doesn't appear at all, and apparently is not automatically triggered by moving your cursor into the Dock area. You CAN make the Dock appear even then by pressing Option-Command-D. Press the same keys again to hide the Dock. But, in my test, I could not trigger the Dock by moving the mouse cursor into that area.
@whichimac: even if there is a placeholder (I can't tell), you can move the normal location for the Dock to either the left or right side, so nothing can happen unless you choose to use that edge of the screen. Again, as far as I can tell, there is no residual placeholder when using that option from OnyX. I never knew that could be done with such a small disruption.
