So I tried trading in my 2018 MBP. I wiped clean the drive and attempted to reinstall MacOS via internet recovery. I had problems initially as I would get stuck on the select WIFI screen even after entering the correct password. After waiting on the screen for about 10 minutes, I eventually got the 2002F error. I was able to eventually reinstall the OS by using my mobile data hotspot after advise by Apple tech support. I was told by the support person that the 2002F and any error code starting with 2xxx is internet connectivity related. After this, I sent my MBP to the trade in partner (Brightstar). Lo and behold, Brightstar gets the same error - a variation - 2005F. So they set the trade in value to $0. After getting the returned MBP, I reinstalled MacOS again using mobile hotspot and ran a diagnostics. No issue. Now I'm not sure I would be able to trade in the machine.

Does anyone know why this happens to some machine and others not at all? Apart from the possibility that this is ISP related, it appears to me that not all machines have this issue as Brightstar has told me that this issue has not happened with other MBP that they assess. This suggests that their ISP must be allowing the internet recovery connection to Apple servers.

It's annoying that I'm unable to trade in the MBP even if it doesn't have any issues.

Would you consider this a defect in the machine? The Apple care is about to expire next month so I'm thinking of sending this to the Apple store for diagnostics and potentially fixing/replacement if there are issues.
