A key new feature of macOS Monterey is the ability to AirPlay content to a supported Mac from other Apple devices, such as an iPhone or iPad, and we've confirmed with Apple that this will include Apple Fitness+ workout videos with one limitation.

apple-fitness-plus-on-mac.jpg

After starting an Apple Fitness+ workout on an iPhone or iPad, users will be able to wirelessly stream the audio and video to a supported Mac using AirPlay, providing a convenient way to view the workouts on a larger screen. The only drawback to using Apple Fitness+ with AirPlay is that on-screen metrics such as heart rate and calories burned are not displayed on the Mac, but they can still be viewed on an Apple Watch.

AirPlay to Mac is supported on the following Mac models running macOS Monterey:
  • MacBook Pro (2018 and later)
  • MacBook Air (2018 and later)
  • iMac (2019 and later)
  • iMac Pro (2017)
  • Mac mini (2020 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2019)
We've encountered issues with Apple Fitness+ workouts over AirPlay on macOS Monterey, but the software update is currently in beta. The feature should be functional by time macOS Monterey is publicly released later this year.

Apple Fitness+ was not supported on the Mac until now, as there is no Fitness app for Mac and the service is not available on the web.

Launched in December 2020, Apple Fitness+ is a subscription-based service that provides access to a library of workout videos updated on a weekly basis. Apple Fitness+ can be accessed in the Fitness app on an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, and requires an Apple Watch Series 3 or later with a few exceptions. The service is priced at $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year in the United States and is available in five other countries.

What is the problem? Surely this was contemplated during the run-up to the release of AF? Right? And if not, why is it not in the newest machines? Maybe the same long-term planning team as the HomePod.

Anyone else feel like they’d rather go outside to a park or a gym than stay at home as we’ve been doing for the past 15 months?
There are many reasons why this doesn't work for some. It's mind-boggling that you don't seem to understand that. Firstly I go to my local gym 5-6 days a week. The place is packed with male millennials who think they are Captain America and the females think they are hot trying to dress like J-LO. While not everyone that goes to a gym is like this (myself included) there are certainly a lot of self-absorbed ego maniacs and that is intimidating for some people and they tend to shy away from gyms, let alone being concerned about germs.

Working out in a park? Are you kidding? Yeah a few will do that but aside from jogging not everyone is comfortable doing workouts outside in the public and there is very little workout equipment at a park.

So Apple can't do it unless you've got a brand new Mac.

But Reflector has been able to do it for almost a decade, on much older hardware.

Are Apple's programmers really that utterly incompetent?

(Rhetorical question. I know the answer is yes.)

No. Apple programmers are not utterly incompetent. If they were, how did Apple become one of the largest and most successful tech companies in the world where millions of customers, many repeat, open their wallets and pay premium prices to purchase millions of products, year after year after year?

You may not be aware there's a difference between "can't" and choosing or having no compelling reason to do so.

I would prefer to use my Mac tbh. I don’t want to use our OLED TV and have image burn

Why is fitness+ not available in most countries in Europe and no one is talking about it?

Is it because

a) they dont give a stool?
b) they don't want you to use a stool?
c) lazy
d) i cant think of anything
There is one particular issue to be added to your list. It’s more likely that as Europe has around 15 languages, either Apple decides to dud the current videos, which is just awful, each country has its own fitness team or more likely eventually have fitness coaches who are at least bi/tri-lingual.

I agree, probably the EU to blame.

Enjoying Fitness+ here in the UK and quite a few other people I know have started to use it more frequently which is nice to see!
I think most don’t realise the logistics around the language barrier. Around 15 languages in Europe, so I wouldn’t say it’s a EU legislation issue.

Languages probably. When Apple expand Fitness+ I would expect to see announcements around new recording centres in the target countries to make it easier to create classes in the local languages which also fit in with the local music and culture

I thought it was supposed to be easy to convert iOS apps to MacOS now... how do they still not have a fitness+ app for the mac?

This seems likely to me.

I don’t like it though, I would very happily use the English workouts.

In fact, I may actually prefer them even if there had been localized versions available. I have my OS and app languages default to English, and tend to read books, manuals and other instructions/documentation in the language they were originally written in, if possible. Something is always lost in translation.

The Apple website is a great example. The content, especially the product description headings, are a little corny, sure. However, the more or less literal translations to Swedish are downright cringeworthy. I wish Apple would use local copywriters with a feel for the language and the culture that were allowed to translate more freely, rather than the robotic translations of phrases such as “blast past fast” or “lose your knack for losing things” that are very awkward in Swedish.

I'm pretty sure it's language related. Easier not to provide the service to an entire country than deal with an angry French person complaining about a service not available in his native language.
Just look at how they mess up languages & Siri on Homepod and AppleTV.

It seems completely backwards that I can start a video workout from the phone in my pocket but not from the portable 15" screen that's made by that same company, more powerful than that phone, and that I can position how I choose and actually see across the room. Why isn't there a native Fitness+ experience on the mac?
Main reason I did not renew my Apple Fitness+ subscription. It's silly to watch exercise videos on a tiny phone screen.

I don't have an Apple TV or a TV that supports Airplay. But I do have a Mac. I was hoping that I could use my Mac display, which is not as big as a TV but still far better than a phone, for Fitness+. Nope. Impossible. Canceled Fitness+.

I don't understand why a Fitness+ app isn't available on the Mac. At least make it available for M1 Macs which can use iPad apps.

Probably with different tolerances of "this is a bad user experience" vs. "this is so bad we're flat-out not going to allow it".

lol

Feel free to apply for a job there. Apple has some of the best software engineers in the world.

Why isn't Fitness+ available on macs to begin with? It seems really weird.

Anyone else find it odd that the 2018 Mac mini is left out of this party when the 2018 Air and other less performant 2018 Macs (I'm looking at you 13" MacBook Pro!) got in?

Yeah, I think most of that now takes place at Apple Europe in Ireland. So the problem is a corporate centralization thing.

Well this would have been great when I had the free trial that I basically couldn’t use because I had no iPad or AppleTV… 3 month trial completely wasted.

It's like Udemy killing the tvOS app because AirPlay exists.
To say a feature like this is part of an OS, a proper app is required.

Indeed. And there is nothing worse than Udemy app on iPad. At least the Udemy for Business is just terrible. I have given up on that, and just see the videos on safari if I am on iPad.

I don't have a mac... but I would have never guessed that Fitness+ isn't available on Mac. I mean... it's a streaming platform, that also connects to your watch. How is it possible they don't have it! Fitness+ has great workouts, but it's a cumbersome service. And it really sucks to not be able to have a separate fitness+ profile for different users in the house.

I think you'd need to expand on that question.

  • why can't you substitute an Apple Watch for a Mac? well, for one, it doesn't really have those sensors
  • why can't you substitute an Apple TV for a Mac? I think mostly because they haven't gotten around to it, and because they haven't prioritized it. A big screen is obviously more ideal for watching fitness videos.
  • OK, so why does it work with an iPad? Probably because the Fitness app already existed on the iPhone, but doesn't exist on the Mac. Porting portions of Fitness to the iPad was probably (slightly) easier than moving it over to Catalyst so it they can port it to the Mac.
  • OK, but why doesn't all of the Fitness app simply exist everywhere? Why is the iPad one so limited? Because of HealthKit: your health data only exists on your iPhone (and optionally in iCloud). There is no notion of cross-device sync here at all, with the exception of unidirectional(!) import of health data from the Apple Watch and other devices to the phone. They'd probably have to significantly rework/expand HealthKit.
And I would love for that to happen some day. You can make lots of lovely charts with the health data, and right now, it's kind of silo'd. It'd be great to take the Health app and run it on a bigger screen.

But, tl;dr: because it's a rather niche case.

Language support? Guess Apple doesn't want their fitness classes appearing like a poorly dubbed martial arts film from the 60's-70's?

Apple doesn't trust non-English speakers to understand the language. In Norway, it's impossible to set Siri on AppleTV to English unless you have an Apple account connected to an English territory. Which is a tad inconvenient for my husband, born in an English speaking country, but using a Norwegian credit card with his Norwegian Apple account. Sadly, Siri in Norwegian is a fairly useless joke.
