Hiya all,

Has anyone experience issues where wake from sleep is really slow to resume, or when restarting macOS Monterey you invariably suffer an OS crash?
Shutting down then powering up seems more reliable.

MBP 13" 2018
i5 2,3GHZ
8GB

Cheers, Ian.

Hi Ian,

Experiencing same issues on my Macbook Air 2018. About half of the time I get a Kernel Panic when waking from sleep when my macbook is connect to my external display. When the display is not connected it doesn't occur. There's another thread about this in the Mac Pro section, but for me it's Monterey related and not limited to Mac Pro's so I think it's good to start this thread here.
See the other thread and workarounds here:

Thanks baas! My MBP is connected to an external HP 23er display via an Apple USB A/HDMI dongle so I'll definitely check out that workaround.

Just updated to 12.1 yesterday ? - I've also installed amphetamine.

FYI had constant crash on sleep on a MBP 16" 2019 on both 12.0 and 12.1 the only fix that worked was running Onyx app with the option for "Delete Time Machine local snapshots" selected. Obviously with TM disk disconnected.

I have a 2018 Mini that I recently updated from Catalina to Monterey. I was only on 12.0 for a couple of days, so I didn't notice a persistent problem but since going to 12.1 I have had persistent crashes when asleep (the "kernel panic") variety. I have tried re-setting PRAM, NVRAM etc, booted in safe mode and updated software. When in safe mode I seem to have no crashes. I only have a Bose speaker system and Samsung monitor connected, via USB and HDMI respectively. I have also read the thread in the Mac Pro section, seems like many are having this issue.

Here is the error report:

Just an update to my post above. I had been running this Mac with a cabled ethernet connection. Just as a test I have unplugged it and I'm running wireless with my router VERY close by. I have gone the entire day including a long sleep session of about 9 hours with no re-boots. I am going to test it overnight starting now. Energy Saving settings are all unchecked, so from the default settings "Wake for network access" and "Enable Power Nap" are disabled.

EDIT: OK overnight sleep was successful, so I will keep on powered up and letting it sleep just to see how long it goes until a crash.

This issue has been around for quite a while, particularly for laptops.

Running Big Sur on my MBPro 16" resulted in a complete OS crash and restart with any Wake from Sleep longer than a few hours. I tried the same thing you have and more. What eventually fixed it for me under Big Sur was unplugging all the USB connected devices before walking away from my Mac for more than a few hours. It was a royal pain in the arse!

When I updated to Monterey the Wake From Sleep problem went away completely. No issues waking from sleep at all. But this is not the case for many people.

I can only suggest trying to unplug your speakers before sleeping the Mac and seeing if that helps.

NOTE: I also only had that problem with an external display was connected (via USB-C) and my USB devices connected through that display. When running the laptop with nothing connected, the problem never occurred.

I am experiencing the same issue for the last 4 nights. My 2021 MBP base-model 14" always crashed in long sleeps (e.g. 5-8 hours in sleep).

Here is what I created as a thread, before I know this thread.

Long story short, for information that might be beneficial as details:
- I use AlDente and battery is limited to 50% charge
- I use an external monitor connected via HDMI output of the MBP (cable always connected, even in sleep, but the monitor is closed while the MBP in sleep)
- I leave these apps open: Safari, Mail, Spotify
- I use a Satechi keyboard (bluetooth) and a Magic Mouse, but both are turned-off when I close the MBP lid.

- MacOS Monterey 12.2.1 (currently the latest OS version)
