I'll admit I'm not all that thrilled with the name "Monterey" for the next version of MacOS. But it gave me the idea to list out some suggestions for future versions. Note... this is intended to be at least somewhat humorous. :)

MacOS Trinity (after the Trinity Range in northern California)
MacOS Hetchy-Hetch (after the reservoir the greenies are trying very hard to drain despite California being very short on water)
MacOS Joshua Tree
MacOS Shasta (no, not after the beverage)
MacOS Lassen Peak
MacOS Mammoth Lakes
MacOS Kings Canyon
MacOS Dusy Ershim (after the Dusy-Ershim 4x4 trail near Kings Canyon)
MacOS Rubicon
MacOS Barstow (why not?)
MacOS Stockton (also why not?)
MacOS Skid Row (can you imagine the wallpaper they'd include with this?)

Specifically, Death Valley-inspired ones:

MacOS Eureka (after the Eureka Sand Dunes)
MacOS Crankshaft (after Crankshaft Junction)
MacOS Ubehebe (after the crater)
MacOS Racetrack (after the playa with the mysterious moving stones)
MacOS Panamint (after Panamint Valley)
MacOS Furnace Creek
MacOS Badwater (after Badwater Basin, the lowest point in the US)

So... ultimately, I think they could have done better than, "Monterey." But whatever. Feel free to add your own ideas!

I like Seqoia.

Napa would be great because people could make great Napa Auto Parts wallpapers and memes.

I could see Sequia, Trinity, Eureka, maybe even Mammoth Lake or Lassen Peak actually happening.

But I genuinely think macOS Redwood would work super well

MacOS Cheddar
MacOS Gouda
MacOS Cheeseburger (would probably upset the vegetarians)

I'm liking macOS Encino, allowing for silly jokes at the Genius Bar:

"What version are you using?"
"Encino, man!"

Or how about:

macOS Zzyzx
macOS Skidoo
macOS Earp

It's Hetch Hetchy, not Hetchy Hetch.
The original Skid Row is in Seattle.

I vote for:

macOS Oildale
macOS Manteca (i.e. lard)
macOS Blythe
macOS Black Butte
macOS Weed
macOS Baldy

One that they probably will do, which at some point they will dub "the last version of MacOS":

MacOS Zzyzx.

It's the last word in the dictionary, plus a stop on I-15 between Barstow and Las Vegas, where the Zzyzx Mineral Springs are located.

I don't think the interest in the naming of the macOS is anywhere near as fun as when they were big cats. I know Apple chose this California naming convention to better represent its company and can continue doing this for a much longer time, but for me not from California, it means nothing.

It’s probably an unpopular opinion but I think that Apple should eventually drop any name and just call it macOS 12.0, 13.0, etc. It is the only Apple OS to have a name and it’s very confusing when we try to look to compatibility of an app, hardware limitations, etc. I remember generally the actual and past year software names, but after that it’s harder to tell in the good order. It would be more useful to drop the naming convention as we could tell only by the number how old the OS is.
