I’m not sure which is the best forum to post this question. Please signpost if needed.

I have an iPhone and Mac etc. Lots of photos of the family tagged and geolocated and so forth. No problems.

My parents however aren’t. They are moving and downsizing. They have loads of old family photos that they want to share with my and my siblings as well as create space. Scanning isn’t an issue. However, as they only have Windows machines, I wondered if they’re were any good alternatives to macOS photos that allow geo and/or face tagging that can export the photos with meta data to share with the rest of the family. And which is the best means of sharing?

Google photos, Flickr, etc. My family are all Apple users so we simply share albums in Photos. But for other photog enthusiast friends, who may be on a variety of computer platforms, I use Flickr - metadata is intact, images and albums have permissions for viewing control, etc.

Google photos is great but IIRC it down scale images so could negate the effort you put in to get quality scans.

Have you looked at Adobe Bridge (Create an Adobe CC account for free and It is free)? It has the main tagging and stacking features you need and you can export out. Further, it doesn’t maintain a library like Photos or Lightroom, you point it at folders so it can access your photos library folder and bring in the EXIF tagging from there.

Then for them to look at the images, what about Dropbox or OneDrive? You can share that with them and as these are images that you will not want to lose, then they are safely and securely held in the cloud.

IceDrive cloud storage has one-time pay lifetime subscriptions

Amazon Photos (Prime) unlimited photo storage may be an option.

I personally use Google Photos / photos.google.com to share with my whole family. I don't use Apple Photos at all.
Most of my family are on Macs/iphones and so I share photos that I want to share with them to FB or I just text them. No reason to share every single photo that we take. Do you share every single photo that you take on Google Photos?

Who are you asking? In Google Photos you can choose to share as few or as many photos as you want.

No you can share single photos as well — It has a whole “chat” function where you can add random photos to a shared thread — and they can easily keep in their library with a quick click of a button. Or you can share whole albums.

I honestly really like Google Photos in comparison to Apple Photos. Their AI to group photos by people, places, or things is great! Very easy to quickly search your whole library. Example: I will just search for the word “business card” and it will show me all of the photos that i have ever taken that look like business cards.

Also, if you are running out of space on your phone — Google Photos has a function to delete all the photos on your phone that you have already backed up.

Does Google Photos sync to iPhone/Ipad/Mac/ and apple TV?

If you have Google Photos installed on iPhone/iPad yes and on Mac I usually just go to photos.google.com and Apple TV. I am not 100% sure if there is a Google Photos app but I would have to look. I pretty much use Google Photos as a replacement app for the Photos app on all my Apple Devices.
