Apple today released the fifth beta of macOS Sequoia to developers for testing purposes, and some Mac users noticed a new forest-themed "Sequoia Sunrise" wallpaper appearing after installing the update.

The wallpaper has not been officially released, and it is not a selectable option from the Wallpapers interface in the Settings app. Instead, it is tucked away in the system files, as noted by Mr. Macintosh.

Mr. Macintosh has the wallpaper available to download on his website, but it can also be found in macOS Sequoia beta 5 in the /System/Library/Desktop Pictures/.wallpapers folder if you want access to it early. The file is hidden, so Shift + Command + Period has to be used to display hidden files. There is a dynamic .mov version with subtle movements as well, but there is no Dark Mode version.

After you pull the image from the system folder or download it, you can right click and choose Set Desktop Picture to use it as your wallpaper.

That the wallpaper has been showing up for some users suggests that it is going to be added in full in a later beta. Right now, users who do see it after installing the latest macOS Sequoia update cannot select it and it is displayed with an "unknown" label. Not all users are seeing the wallpaper after installing the macOS Sequoia update.

That looks great, was wondering when we would see what Apple would be using for the Sequoia theme. Just have to wait until tomorrow for 15.1 beta 2 it seems.

The older 15.0 beta 4 and 15.1 beta only show these folders via /System/Library/Desktop Pictures/.wallpapers

How is Sequoia Beta anyway? Thinking of downloading it but kinda scared 😱

Awesome. I come here for this stuff.

Even though I won't put the betas on my production machines, it's nice to get the latest wallpapers to get a jump on the new themes in the upcoming OS release.

I hate to say it, but for work I've reverted to a super boring solid gray desktop so I don't lose things on a busy background. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(I know, I could browse my ~/Desktop folder in another Finder window, but I have a multi-decade habit of having big icons of files and folders on the desktop)

If it's your only machine then stay scared and don't install it. Even if the current beta is stable and works with your apps, the next beta might not be. The recent public betas have been mostly positive experiences, but there is a reason for the 'beta' label and since you're making this comment, then you would likely be wise to stay away until the public release.

Don’t do it on a machine you depend on. It doesn’t matter how stable it is now, it’s a beta, things can still break.

Thanks. Ive been using ios18 beta and it's been great. Was hoping macOS would be the same.

Been wondering why they only gave us some ugly cartoonish looking wallpapers when Sequoia is such a beautiful place. Ever since I updated my MacBook, it has been showing some cool wallpapers from what looks like Monument valley, no idea why but they look good so I haven’t changed them.

It is the same. They’re all betas and can all break at any point. Even the public betas (although those are a little safer). If you have to ask about installing them, you probably shouldn’t be installing them.

Why don't we get subtly animated wallpapers on iPhone? I would think the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max can handle it.

I had animated wallpapers on my iPhone like 12 years ago (jailbreak tweak), so the new phones could definitely handle it. It’s always been a case of Apple allowing things, but it would definitely cause more battery drain and heat. Until Apple stops being cheap and putting tiny batteries in the phones, and doing nothing to address the overheating issues, I don’t see it happening.

Know that you are rolling the dice with ios18 beta as well. There could be compatibility, security, data corruption, poor battery life or other issues that arise.

Chances are things will be fine but every know and then they put our a beta that breaks something and have to roll it back. It's rare but it has happened before that betas can even brick devices (just Google "iOS Beta bricked my phone").

Be careful if you rely on these on your only device...

I used to run betas on a spare test Mac at work to see how things were going for compatibility in an enterprise environment. I strongly recommend against putting them on a main machine as alluring as having something shiny & new may be!! The betas can get frustratingly buggy, sometimes out of nowhere. Don’t do it! Wait for the final release in the fall.

Looks cool. I jumped in with beta 4 and it runs pretty much the same as Sonoma did, without much or anything exciting, except a lot of nags about constantly authorizing Teams and privacy prompts that feels like Windows Vista all over again.
