The Mac is not limited like iOS is. You can download applications outside of the Mac App Store that do cool things (for now).
You are brilliant! You really are.

Every time I start poking around for updated info on Sierra issues, wondering if I should finally give it a try, I find something outlandish like this. Apparently my 2015 rMBP will live its life on El Capitan and never know anything better.

Ditto, I have ALWAYS updated on day one to the latest and greatest OSX, but this time there was this little voice in the back of my head that told me not too (I think it was related to the mediocre 2016 MBPs) so I held off. The more I observe, the happier I am that I did. What a dud of a year for apple. I really hope they get their act together. I LOVE(d) their products, but for the time being at least I'm on a buying freeze to see if things get better. If not... well... theirs always linux...

Seriously, do Apple execs actually sit around and purposefully come up with the worst possible ideas as a joke?

Or maybe they all used to work for Peugeot?

(Skip to the 53 second mark if your attention span won't stretch to the full 3:29...)

It just like you take a plane and pilot said we can not tell you when you arrived to the destination because the flight duration is inaccuracy.

Apple believes that the battery life indicator in macOS Sierra is ultimately inaccurate and has led to some confusion about battery performance, and so it has been removed in macOS Sierra 10.12.2.

Too bad they couldn't do anything about that other than to remove it. I wonder if the developer of the OS can let them see the source code so they can try to fix it............

Apple did the same thing with the iPhone 4 antenna signal indicator. It's funny because it seemed to fix the problem, less reports came in.

Yeah they made the bars bigger and basically made it so you get more bars more often. See, fixed!

In other news, Apple defaults the WiFi signal strength bars to MAX. Apple insists everyone should have a strong signal.

The next update will make sure the Finder always says 100% of hard drive space is free / available. We'll never have to worry about running out of storage space.

2017 will also bring the update that says all Macs built after 2016 have 50 terabytes of RAM installed.

Apple knows how to reduce support calls.

In 2018, the tech support number will be changed to require dialing 1-800-APPLE in binary

so they have removed a feature of a laptop that has been around for YEARS.

It can't get any worse can it?!
Just another one of those little things that used to set the Apple laptops apart from competition gone. This is easily as disappointing as losing magsafe.

Not even a lot of Apple apologists kicking around regarding this subject, feels kinda strange actually.

Apple pulled a Trump if anything happens blame to consumer or blame the media for fake news. Tim Cook GO AWAY! You are nob Steve Jobs you are Windows Vista.

if it was smart enough to look at your average usage pattern then give you an estimation based on that.
I am actually really sure it does in fact base things off of an average like you described. But averages are bound to be inaccurate occasionally still. Like others have already said: nobody ever thought the time remaining was exact to the minute but it provides a rough enough ball park figure to be a missed feature.

I get that the number is all over the place - my beef is with the way Apple fixes this. There is a point in measuring the current capacity inside the battery and at what rate you are draining the battery - this very easily translate into time remaining. You even have the added benefit of doing sort of a "eco mode gauge" this way. If this number is widely incorrect it's because Apple never bothered making it correct - not that this is virtually impossible to do so - that is my point. My Lenovo X1 does this every time I click the icon, my 2008 MBP could do this (never noticed this as a problem anyhoo), so what is the great challenge here? Did Apple all of a sudden get a myriad of calls regarding remaining battery time, and if they did why not just fix the root cause?

Yeah, I get that, and I agree. One solution might be some sort of machine learning on how the user typically uses their machine and how the battery lasts over time.

Are you guys serious? How many users on this forum have been using the indicator as the end all for their battery life? A LOT. Many of whom were enraged that they were getting 3 hours on a full charge without actually timing the battery to realize they were getting much more.

By removing the inaccurate indicator, now Apple can ACCURATELY measure how many batteries are actual lemons, or how bad the software may be optimized because people will complain with legitimacy. Not "I'M AT 100% BUT IT SAYS I have 2:45 HOURS LEFT I'M RETURNING MY MACBOOK AGHHH."

But don't you find it odd that this has NEVER been a problem on the previous Macbooks? Sure it's been inaccurate but I don't remember crowds of people complaining about bad battery life using that meter as the definitive says all means all. It may have been inaccurate but it's an odd time for Apple to just now realize it's inaccurate and remove it all of the sudden.

If you are upset you can use iStat Menus to restore the timed battery countdown.
Mine reads out 10 hours remaining.
I'm really confused as to what the freak out is.
The Energy tab in the Activity Monitor is a great way to see what is using the most energy.

This smells a lot like the move they pulled with the iPhone 4 when they made the reception bars "bolder" to try to give some kind of placebo effect to hide antennaegate. I remember when I used to come to MacRumors to be excited about Apple and upcoming products. It's just bad news anymore and it really bums me out.

I've already moved away from Mac in favor of my gaming PC at home, and I'm sure iPhone won't be too far behind it.Still prefer the 2015 MacBook Pro over the junk ThinkPads we had for work, but even that has become a pain with constant magic mouse disconnects following the release of Sierra. It just works....when Apple gets around to fixing it.... eventually..... maybe?.... ahh forget it just buy the new model.

i'm really glad i went with a surface pro 4 now...

i wish i could somehow put osx on my surface, and while technically it's possible but the wifi/bluetooth don't function in it.

apple's decisions as of late aren't inspiring confidence in me.

Is it really hard for people to understand that the battery estimate was NOT accurate? There were many people reporting their battery life soely on the estimate rather than ACTUAL battery used from full charge to dead.

The car is too slow, so we removed the speedometer. :)

A speedometer is very accurate. The battery estimate is not.

it's clear that Apple is trying to run away from the issue rather than fixing it. For a company like Apple, this is bad, very bad. Tim Cook is a curse for Apple.
