The Mac is not limited like iOS is. You can download applications outside of the Mac App Store that do cool things (for now).
Every time I start poking around for updated info on Sierra issues, wondering if I should finally give it a try, I find something outlandish like this. Apparently my 2015 rMBP will live its life on El Capitan and never know anything better.
Apple did the same thing with the iPhone 4 antenna signal indicator. It's funny because it seemed to fix the problem, less reports came in.

In other news, Apple defaults the WiFi signal strength bars to MAX. Apple insists everyone should have a strong signal.
Just another one of those little things that used to set the Apple laptops apart from competition gone. This is easily as disappointing as losing magsafe.so they have removed a feature of a laptop that has been around for YEARS.
It can't get any worse can it?!
I am actually really sure it does in fact base things off of an average like you described. But averages are bound to be inaccurate occasionally still. Like others have already said: nobody ever thought the time remaining was exact to the minute but it provides a rough enough ball park figure to be a missed feature.if it was smart enough to look at your average usage pattern then give you an estimation based on that.
I get that the number is all over the place - my beef is with the way Apple fixes this. There is a point in measuring the current capacity inside the battery and at what rate you are draining the battery - this very easily translate into time remaining. You even have the added benefit of doing sort of a "eco mode gauge" this way. If this number is widely incorrect it's because Apple never bothered making it correct - not that this is virtually impossible to do so - that is my point. My Lenovo X1 does this every time I click the icon, my 2008 MBP could do this (never noticed this as a problem anyhoo), so what is the great challenge here? Did Apple all of a sudden get a myriad of calls regarding remaining battery time, and if they did why not just fix the root cause?
Are you guys serious? How many users on this forum have been using the indicator as the end all for their battery life? A LOT. Many of whom were enraged that they were getting 3 hours on a full charge without actually timing the battery to realize they were getting much more.
By removing the inaccurate indicator, now Apple can ACCURATELY measure how many batteries are actual lemons, or how bad the software may be optimized because people will complain with legitimacy. Not "I'M AT 100% BUT IT SAYS I have 2:45 HOURS LEFT I'M RETURNING MY MACBOOK AGHHH."
[doublepost=1481689021][/doublepost]The next update will make sure the Finder always says 100% of hard drive space is free / available. We'll never have to worry about running out of storage space.
2017 will also bring the update that says all Macs built after 2016 have 50 terabytes of RAM installed.
Apple knows how to reduce support calls.
In 2018, the tech support number will be changed to require dialing 1-800-APPLE in binary
