Just tested this. Sure enough, you're right. The Speaking Rate slider resets back to default after quitting System Settings. Wow... stuff like this would take literally 5 minutes to fix.

Have you submitted this feedback by Feedback Assistant?

If not, I just did.
Yup, on the first week of october; about a week after Sonoma came out.

EDIT: I checked the feedback assistant ticket I opened to check what I put there. What happens, according to what I wrote, is if you set it the setting will persist until reboot, but if you open it again it will reset at that point.

I have an M2 MacBook Air w/16gb ram at that, and after updating to 14.4 I have a MASSIVE memory leak. My memory pressure within a few hours, by the end of the day at most, of a reboot is already in the red, usually with few or no apps having been opened since boot and all apps closed when I check. Activity Monitor, with all processes selected, doesn't show anything thats using a lot of memory. The machine drags like ass by the end of the day too. I did a fresh install yesterday just in case and it happened again today. Apple needs to get its crap together.

Since 14.4 new messages received in iMessage are not arriving. Until I send a new message from MacOs the app doesn't receive any new messages. Anyone else have this issue?
Yes. Now I have to manually sync Messages, sometimes multiple times a day, and do it via System Settings because the Sync Now button under the Messages app's own Settings menu seems to not do anything.

Since Apple unveiled macOS Sonoma 14.4 on March 7, the transition to the latest software update has not been entirely smooth for everyone, and a number of issues have been reported by users that significantly impact their daily workflow.

Reasons-to-Not-Upgrade-to-macOS-Sonoma-14.4-Feature.jpg

This article lists the most prominent challenges users have faced since updating to macOS Sonoma 14.4, and offers potential solutions where available.

USB Hub and Monitor Ports
Lost Connectivity
Some users have experienced connectivity issues with USB hubs and monitors with USB ports since updating to macOS 14.4, with several reports of mice, keyboards, and other peripherals no longer being detected. While Apple works on a fix, a handful of users have had some success by changing the setting "Allow accessories to connect" to "Ask for new accessories" under the Security section of System Settings ➝ Privacy & Security.

Java Processes
Unexpected Terminations
Oracle last week warned that the macOS 14.4 update can cause Java processes to "terminate unexpectedly" on Macs. The issue affects all Java versions from Java 8 to the early access builds of JDK 22, and there is no workaround available. Affected users might be unable to return to a stable configuration unless they have a complete backup of their systems prior to the OS update.

Printer Operation
Removed or Corrupted Drivers
The update may remove or corrupt printer drivers. Specifically, the core CUPS software for printing operations over a network seems to be removed. HP printers in particular appear to be affected, but the exact commonalities between the reports, such as the use of Microsoft Defender or JAMF mobile device management software, are not entirely clear. Some users have found a workaround by granting Full Disk Access to certain processes in System Settings ➝ Privacy & Security. Despite these attempts, a comprehensive solution has not yet been found.

PACE/iLok Protections
Audio Unit Plugins Crash
There have been reports of compatibility issues with PACE products, including the iLok License Manager, connected to Apple silicon Macs running macOS 14.4. The problem specifically impacts plugins from various manufacturers that are safeguarded by PACE/iLok, including those made by Universal Audio, when used with host DAWs such as Logic Pro. Temporarily setting a DAW and the iLok License Manager application to run in Rosetta mode appears to circumvent the issue.

iCloud Drive
Destroys Saved Versions
Users running macOS 14.4 that have "Optimize Mac Storage" enabled should be aware that they are at risk of losing all previously saved versions of a file if they opt to remove it from iCloud Drive local storage. Versions are normally created automatically when users save files using apps that work with the version system in macOS. If you have already updated, either do not save files to iCloud Drive at all, or turning off Optimize Mac Storage. To perform the latter in System Settings, click your Apple ID, select iCloud, and then toggle off the switch next to "Optimize Mac Storage."

Consider Not Updating

If you anticipate that any of these problems could significantly impact your daily operations or productivity, it may be prudent to delay updating to the latest version of macOS Sonoma until Apple addresses these concerns with a subsequent fix. Have you identified any other issues since updating? Let us know in the comments and we might include them here if they turn out to be commonplace.

About JAVA: I use JAVA 21 on both my silicon machines and I got the impression that only classical
desktop applications are hit, although intermittent.
I saw some comments about JAVA use awareness;
I think that many people do not realise that they are using JAVA.
Example: the ShutterEncoder tool (video) comes with JAVA included.

Just go to Mr. Macintosh's website - there you will find all macOS installers as well as the IPSW downloads.
The site has saved me many times ;-)

Thanks and appreciated.
I stumbled across the website of Mr. Macintosh whilst searching for older installers.
But it doesn't feel very secure to download and install an OS from a third party on a brand new machine.
I still think Apple should provide this.

Thanks to the admins for resetting my account after losing my 2FA keys 🙂‍↕️

I updated to 14.4 and I get this error. Apparently others have been also on Apples forum because the thread is still active but the error for me is when clicking on Network —-> Ethernet.

I use Ctrl + scroll on all my Macs to zoom into the screen (you first have to enable it under Accessibility - in case you don't know what I'm talking about).

With 14.4, on my 2018 MacBook Pro 15", I can still zoom with ctrl + trackpad/mouse scroll. However, I can no longer move this zoomed in screen from side to side when I hit the border. With 14.4, the mouse gets stuck and doesn't cause the screen to move in any directions.

The problem is that with each version dozens of small bugs appear, which are then never fixed. And even if you upgrade to a three-year-old version that already only receives security patches, you will likely encounter new unfixed problems. And every year it gets worse in terms of attention to detail. And soon another redesign disaster awaits us...
Plus, Apple seems hell bent on continuously removing functionality these days.

I can't see a single compelling reason to upgrade to Sonoma in the first place.

I didn’t know this existed thank you. Where in system settings is there an iMessage sync button?

When Apple Computer changed their name to Apple I posted that in the future the Mac would become less and less of a priority as time went on. I never thought it would get this bad, though.
$10 billion over 10 years on a car failure. Imagine if those resources and time had been spent on best in class, minimally bug free software.

Apart from all the bugs that a) havent been fixed or b) been introduced with this uopdate, its the sheer size of it and for what ? Looking at the summary we get a podcast update, some bloody emojis and a tweak to the favourites bar in Safari and it is over 3GB !! really ? No thanks

exactly. they are missing the big picture by a long shot. it would serve Apple well to require the engineers to study the user forums and not just their own.

Maybe it's good NOT to know what is in those Gb's; maybe some security updates they don't dare to talk about.
Then again, maybe it is not possible to replace just a few modules; maybe they had to rebuild the whole OS?
We can only guess, and I don't want to know everything.
Now, where is the next update?
;JOOP!

Just read about "Apple Silicon Vulnerability" in code called DMPs.
You just GOT to install all imminent updates, in spite of any new bugs.
I hate to say it ...

For security reasons, some portions of the OS need to be replaced wholesale each time.

The raw byte difference between those two versions is probably not even in the hundreds of Megabytes.

When things start breaking in the OS it means they are changing tons of stuff under the hood for the next os. Permissions are changing on the system level to allow all that AI stuff to have total control of your system events some day. The mouse and keyboard are already tracked, now the rest will be too. Just so we can have a few extra features. The last os before a major release used to be the most stable version. Priorities have changed.

why is universal control SO ******* buggy ALL THE TIME? I lose connection dozens of times per day, and if i'm connected, it's extremely laggy part of the time. i love the feature so much, but why is it so goddamned unreliable? it's so frustrating to be typing something and having the letters repeat endlessly due to lag.

i need someone to build a dedicated app with some sort of bluetooth connection or tunnel to keep a consistent connection.

btw, using UC with my M2 mac mini and m2 mba.

this seem to be one of the longest ever intervals between a point release (fraught with problems) and a new beta dev release, let alone a fix release.

The macOS 15 will be announced at WWDC 2024 on June 3rd 2024 and released later this year.
The macOS Sonoma (macOS 14) is just a failed project, and the odd numbered macOS versions are usually the best.
